Solving Today’s NYT Mini Crossword Was a Clever Weekend Challenge

Hey everyone! So let’s talk about something that’s become a little ritual for a lot of us puzzle nerds — the New York Times Mini Crossword. If you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, you’re really missing out on one of the smartest five-minute challenges you can add to your day. Today’s Mini, dated Saturday, June 14th, was no exception. It was short, but wow, it packed a punch.

Now, the Mini Crossword is kind of like the big NYT Crossword’s little sibling. It’s a 5×5 grid, simple in format, but don’t let that size fool you. It can be delightfully devious. The best part? It’s free to play! You don’t even need a subscription. Just open the app or play it right in your browser. And if you’re the type who likes to go back to previous puzzles, the app’s got an archive just waiting for you.

Today’s grid was loaded with everything from historical references to pop culture and a surprising number of food and drink clues — always fun! Some of the clues that stood out to me include “dessert wine” (answer: PORT ) and “mugful after a sledding excursion,” which of course was COCOA . There was also a nice little nod to tech and coding fans with JAVA making an appearance, thanks to that famous coffee cup logo.

And hey, let’s not ignore the trickier clues. “Desert whine?” — that was a clever one. Answer? IMHOT . Wordplay like that is what keeps this daily puzzle fresh and challenging. Or how about “sag,” which came out as DROOP ? Totally straightforward once you see it, but it can really trip you up when you’re in the moment.

Solving today’s puzzle felt a bit more intense than usual. There were quite a few answers packed in, and some really unusual entries like QUIZME and WHIZBANG in recent editions. For me, it was a test of speed and lateral thinking — two things the Mini always demands. I clocked in around 3 minutes, but that was with a fair bit of head-scratching.

So if you’re like me and start your day with a coffee in one hand and the Mini in the other, you know how satisfying it is to crack that last clue. And if you’re not doing that yet, maybe give it a shot. It’s like a brain warm-up that gets your neurons firing before the day kicks off.

Anyway, that’s the crossword scoop for today. Whether you breezed through it or got stumped by “Nat ___” ( GEO ) or “actor Cage” ( NIC ), the fun is always in the process. Let me know how long it took you — I’m always curious to compare times!
