Tragedy in the Skies: Air India Crash in Ahmedabad Leaves Nation in Mourning
Today, we speak with heavy hearts about one of the most devastating aviation tragedies in recent memory — the Air India crash in Ahmedabad. The London-bound Boeing 787, carrying 242 souls on board, including crew and passengers from several countries, met a horrific fate just moments after takeoff. Among those aboard was a Canadian dentist from Toronto, whose life was cut tragically short during what was supposed to be a routine journey home.
The aircraft, which had taken off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, lost control shortly after liftoff and crashed into a residential neighborhood, striking the hostel of a medical college. Witnesses described an explosion of flames and metal as the Dreamliner tore through buildings, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. It wasn’t just the passengers whose lives were taken — several people on the ground were also killed instantly. Rescue teams rushed to the scene, but what they found was haunting: charred wreckage, twisted steel, and bodies so badly burned that identification has become a painstaking process, relying on DNA testing.

Only one survivor has been confirmed. The rest — families, professionals, students, and crew members — are presumed dead. Their relatives are now caught in a limbo of anguish and disbelief. Imtiyaz Ali Sayed, whose brother Javed, sister-in-law, and two young nieces were aboard the flight, has been searching relentlessly at the hospital. “Until I see his body, I won’t stop looking,” he said, holding onto hope, scrolling through photos and unread messages still marked as delivered.
On the ground, it’s chaos. People like Sameer Shaikh flew from Pune after learning his son Irfan, a crew member, was on board. “He always messaged before takeoff. This time he didn’t,” he said, grief written across his face. His wife hasn’t stopped crying since they received the call.
At the medical college hostel, a second tragedy unfolded. Payal Thakur hasn’t found her mother or niece, both of whom were inside the building cooking lunch when the plane hit. “We’ve searched everywhere. There’s nothing left,” she whispered, standing in the shadow of the scorched remains of the hostel.
This is not just a plane crash. It’s the kind of catastrophe that ripples through communities, countries, and families. There are stories behind each name on that flight manifest — parents, children, dreamers, workers. Lives that will never be lived out fully. The streets of Ahmedabad are filled with mourning. The air hangs heavy with smoke, unanswered questions, and the deafening silence of lives lost too soon.
Today, we remember them. We hold space for their families. And we ask — how, in a world with such advanced technology, can such horror still unfold in mere seconds after takeoff? For now, we wait for answers, but more importantly, we grieve.
