Tragedy Strikes as Whitney Purvis Mourns the Loss of Her Son at 16

I can’t even begin to describe how heartbreaking it is to talk about this—especially when it involves the unimaginable pain of a parent losing a child. For anyone who followed the early seasons of 16 and Pregnant , you may remember Whitney Purvis, who bravely shared her journey of teen motherhood with the world. Today, that same world is mourning with her, as Whitney announced the devastating loss of her 16-year-old son, Weston Owen Gosa Jr.

Whitney shared the news in an emotional Facebook post on June 2nd, writing from a place of raw grief and disbelief. “My beautiful son, Weston, has passed away,” she began, alongside photos of the two of them. “He was only 16 years old. Life is so cruel and unfair. I just don’t understand. Oh, my baby is gone, and I don’t know what to do with myself.” Her words were gut-wrenching, her sorrow palpable. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare come to life.

She poured her heart out in the message, speaking directly to her late son, telling him, “I love you so much, Weston Owen Gosa. God, I love you so much. You are my heart. I was so proud of the young man you were becoming. Rest in peace, my angel. You are gone too soon.”

Weston was born in April 2009 during the first season of the MTV reality show that catapulted Whitney into the public eye. In a follow-up post, Whitney’s grief only deepened as she wrote, “I’ll never understand why life has to be so cruel. You’ll always be my baby.”

While the exact cause of death hasn’t been officially confirmed, Weston’s stepmother, Amy Gosa, shared that he was found unresponsive early Monday morning. “We tried to wake him up at 7 a.m., but he wasn’t breathing,” she said. Despite attempts at CPR by family and paramedics, Weston was pronounced dead at the hospital. Amy also mentioned that Weston had several health issues, including diabetes, making the sudden loss even more tragic. “It was so unexpected,” she wrote. “We are completely heartbroken.”

The pain of losing a child is unfathomable, and it’s something Amy acknowledged as “the most painful thing I have ever experienced.” She remembered Weston as “brilliant, smart, and funny” with so much potential ahead of him.

As fans of 16 and Pregnant reflect on the lives of these young parents who grew up under the public eye, Whitney’s loss is a sobering reminder of how unpredictable and fragile life truly is. There’s no guidebook for grief this deep, especially for a mother losing her firstborn.

Today, hearts go out to Whitney Purvis and her family. We hope they find strength in each other, and in the love they shared with Weston. May he rest in peace.
