Tragic Loss in Llandudno: Remembering Athrun Lombardo
I want to take a moment to talk about something that’s been weighing heavily on the hearts of many—especially those in Llandudno and beyond. It’s the heartbreaking story of a young boy named Athrun Dominic Lombardo, whose life was tragically cut short. Athrun was just 16 years old when he went missing while visiting family in the picturesque coastal town of Llandudno.
The news came out recently that an inquest has officially opened into his death. Athrun had been in Llandudno with his family, visiting his maternal grandparents and staying in an Airbnb during what should have been a peaceful and joyful trip. On May 10, his mother, Catherine, reported him missing from the West Shore area. What followed was a large-scale search, one filled with hope and desperation from his family, the local community, and emergency services.

Tragically, that search ended in sorrow. Athrun’s body was recovered from the sea near West Shore beach on the evening of May 14. A paramedic at the Royal National Lifeboat Institution station in Conwy officially pronounced him deceased at 8:10 p.m. that night.
Earlier today—June 2—the senior coroner for North Wales East and Central, John Gittins, opened the inquest at County Hall in Ruthin. During the brief hearing, it was shared that a provisional cause of death had been recorded as drowning. It’s also known that further investigations are ongoing, and the inquest has been adjourned until those are complete.
Athrun’s mother attended the hearing via video link, which only highlights how devastating and personal this tragedy is. A family’s vacation turned into a nightmare—something no parent or sibling should ever have to endure.
It’s moments like these that remind us just how fragile life can be. Llandudno, usually associated with beautiful seascapes and peaceful escapes, is now marked with deep sadness for those who knew or have come to know Athrun’s story.
