Adam Sandler Honors Carl Weathers With a Heartfelt Rewrite inHappy Gilmore 2
So here’s something really emotional and exciting I wanted to share— Happy Gilmore 2 is officially on its way, and Adam Sandler is back in the swing of things. But the road to the sequel wasn’t smooth, especially after the heartbreaking loss of Carl Weathers, who played the unforgettable Chubbs Peterson in the original 1996 film. Sandler recently opened up about how much of the sequel had to be rewritten because of Weathers’ passing—and honestly, it hits hard.

Originally, Chubbs was supposed to have a big role in Happy Gilmore 2 . Sandler said that in the early drafts, Chubbs wasn’t just a memory—he had a son in the story who actually blamed Happy for Chubbs' death. Chubbs was even appearing in Happy’s dreams throughout the film. But with Carl Weathers sadly passing away in 2024 at age 76, Sandler said the team had to go back and restructure everything. That meant not only changing major plot points but also finding ways to respectfully and meaningfully honor the legacy of Chubbs in the film.
Sandler called it “a painful change” and admitted that Carl’s absence left a major void. He said they made sure to weave tributes to Chubbs into the script, and you can tell from how he talks about it that it was all done with love. “We made a lot of nice references to how great Chubbs was in the movie,” Sandler shared. “That was the biggest change.”
The new film, directed by Kyle Newacheck, premieres on Netflix on July 25, 2025, and it’s packed with returning cast members like Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, and even Ben Stiller. But there are also some wild new additions—Bad Bunny, Eminem, Travis Kelce, and Margaret Qualley, just to name a few.
And for fans wondering if the real-life “Happy Gilmore”—yes, there’s an actual golfer nicknamed that at Ball State University—is in the movie, it looks like he’s not officially listed in the credits. But the film is still set to be a love letter to the original, with golf legends, celebrities, and loads of throwbacks.
It’s really touching to see Sandler not only bring back a fan favorite but also use the sequel as a way to pay tribute to a friend and co-star who meant so much to the story—and to all of us who loved the original. Whether you’re in it for the laughs, the nostalgia, or just to see how Happy’s story continues, this one looks like it’s going to be something special.
