Amazon’s ‘Der Tiger’ Roars into German Theaters in Historic First
So here's something pretty exciting for fans of war dramas and German cinema—Amazon has just made history. For the very first time, a German Amazon Original film is getting a local theatrical release before it even hits Prime Video. The movie is called Der Tiger , and it’s set to premiere in select CineStar theaters across Germany on September 18th.
This isn’t just any film either—it’s a gripping anti-war story set during one of the darkest times in modern history: the Eastern Front of World War II, in 1943. The plot centers on a five-man crew operating a German Tiger tank. They’re sent on a secret mission deep into enemy territory, but this journey is anything but straightforward. Fueled by Wehrmacht-issued methamphetamine—a chilling real-life detail from the war—they slowly spiral into psychological turmoil. The mission begins to morph into a kind of descent into madness, echoing the haunting themes of Apocalypse Now or Das Boot —but with treads and steel instead of submarines.

This film marks a significant moment for Amazon MGM Studios in Germany. While they’ve brought several Hollywood productions to German theaters in the past, this is the first time a locally produced Amazon Original has been granted a theatrical rollout. According to Philip Pratt, Amazon’s head of German Originals, the idea for Der Tiger was compelling from the very beginning. Once director Dennis Gansel and producer Frank Kusche pitched it, it was immediately clear that this story needed to be told—and not just streamed, but experienced on the big screen.
And it makes sense. Gansel isn’t new to tackling heavy, morally complex stories from Germany’s past. His previous films, Napola and The Wave , both explored the seductive danger of authoritarianism and nationalism. With Der Tiger , he continues in that vein, using the intimate setting of a tank crew to explore not just war, but the psychological consequences of blind obedience and fear.
The cast is strong too—David Schütter, Laurence Rupp, Leonard Kunz, Sebastian Urzendowsky, and Yoran Leicher all take leading roles, with a solid crew behind the camera. Pantaleon Films handled production, with Amazon MGM Studios backing the project.
If you're in Germany, this one is definitely worth catching in theaters before it lands on Prime Video later this year. It’s not just a movie—it’s part of a new chapter for streaming originals in Europe.
