Atlas Edges Puebla in Five-Goal Thriller to Open Apertura 2025
What a way to kick off the Apertura 2025! On a warm Friday night in Angelópolis, the Estadio Cuauhtémoc came alive as Puebla hosted Atlas in a dramatic clash to begin the Liga MX season. And the fans definitely got their money’s worth.
Right from the start, it was clear both teams had a point to prove. Puebla, under the command of Pablo Guede, was looking to turn the page after a rough Clausura where they managed just two wins. With several new faces, including Owen González, the Camoteros showed more fight and creativity than we saw last season. But across the field, Atlas, led by new manager Gonzalo Pineda, arrived with serious reinforcements like Rober Pier and César Ramos. They looked ready to shake off the disappointment of missing the playoffs last tournament.

The match was end-to-end, aggressive, and filled with emotion. Atlas struck first in the 24th minute through Gaddi Aguirre, heading home after a well-placed free-kick. But Puebla responded quickly—just five minutes later—with Esteban Lozano finishing a tight move in the box to level it up. The first half ended 1-1, but things were just heating up.
The second half saw Atlas come out firing. Rivaldo Lozano found the net in the 51st minute with a beautiful strike, and just 20 minutes later, Adrián Mora nodded in another to make it 3-1. Puebla, though, refused to go down without a fight. Edgar Guerra clawed one back in the 85th, injecting life into the final minutes.
Despite Puebla’s late push, Atlas held on to claim a 3-2 victory and crucial opening-day points. The win is massive for Pineda’s project, especially with tougher opponents like Cruz Azul and Monterrey coming up next. For Puebla, there were signs of improvement—more energy, more shots, more hunger—but they’ll need to convert that into results quickly.
One thing’s for sure: if this game is any indication of how the Apertura 2025 will play out, we’re in for a wild, goal-filled season.
