Bend It Like Beckham Sequel Is Finally Happening — 23 Years Later

Alright, so here's something exciting: a sequel to Bend It Like Beckham is officially in the works! Yep, more than two decades after the original hit theaters and captured hearts around the world, director Gurinder Chadha has confirmed that she’s bringing the story back — and she’s got a new idea that finally felt good enough to revisit those beloved characters.

Now, if you're like me and grew up watching Bend It Like Beckham , you know it wasn’t just a fun football movie. It tackled identity, culture, ambition, and, of course, that unshakable love for the beautiful game. Parminder Nagra played Jess, a young British-Punjabi girl obsessed with David Beckham and determined to play football despite her traditional parents’ objections. Keira Knightley was her football-loving friend, and together they inspired a generation — especially girls — to break barriers and chase their dreams. It was groundbreaking, especially at a time when women’s football wasn’t really taken seriously.

Fast forward 23 years, and women’s soccer has exploded globally. Gurinder Chadha says she never wanted to make a sequel unless the story was truly worth telling. And just recently, the right idea came to her. She hasn’t shared all the details yet, but she’s working hard to give each returning character a meaningful arc, and she’s hoping the original cast — including Nagra and Knightley — will come back once they’ve read the script.

One cool twist? Chadha is collaborating with Emma Hayes, the legendary coach who now leads the U.S. Women’s National Team. Hayes literally told Chadha she was Keira Knightley’s character growing up — crying in the theater because the movie felt like her life. That’s how real the impact of Bend It Like Beckham was. Hayes is now contributing her real-world football knowledge to make sure the sequel hits all the right notes, both emotionally and athletically.

The plan is to release the new film in 2027, which would mark the 25th anniversary of the original and coincide with the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Talk about timing!

Chadha says the new film will still be “hard-hitting” — because the challenges women face haven’t disappeared — but also incredibly joyful. The message of the original, about girls daring to dream beyond society’s expectations, is still powerful today. And with women’s football now front and center on the global stage, she believes there’s even more to say.

So yes — it’s happening. And hopefully, it’ll capture the same magic, with a fresh kick of energy for a new generation of girls ready to bend the rules.
