Biidaasige Park: Toronto’s New Island Oasis is Finally Here

Hey Toronto, have you heard the news? A whole new park—Toronto’s largest in an entire generation—is opening this month, and I’m genuinely excited to tell you about it. It’s called Biidaasige Park , and it officially opens to the public on July 19, 2025 . This isn’t just any park—it’s located on a brand-new island right in the city: Ookwemin Minising , formerly known as Villiers Island.

Now, what makes Biidaasige Park so special? First off, its name, Biidaasige , means “sunlight shining toward us” in Anishinaabemowin/Ojibwemowin, and that alone sets the tone—it’s about light, connection, and nature. This massive green space covers 60 acres , with 50 acres opening this summer and the rest coming in 2026. Just imagine it: sprawling trails, a brand-new playground, off-leash dog areas, ziplines, and peaceful terraces where you can picnic with friends or family. And the best part? It’s only about a 30-minute walk from downtown, with stunning skyline views you’ll want to photograph over and over.

But Biidaasige Park isn’t just about recreation. It’s the first public space on Ookwemin Minising, an island created not only to host this park but also to help protect Toronto from flooding . The project is part of a broader transformation of Toronto’s waterfront—a natural, sustainable solution to an engineering challenge that will benefit generations to come. It’s all part of a 240-hectare revitalization effort that includes the rerouting and renaturalizing of the Don River mouth.

And guess what? You can access the island right now via three new, boldly colored bridges —Cherry North, Cherry South, and Commissioners—which have already become new landmarks themselves.

The grand opening on July 19 and 20 will be packed with family-friendly activities , from nature walks and birding tours to storytelling, drumming, dance, and hands-on arts and crafts. Everything’s free and for all ages—just bring a lunch and soak in the vibes. Whether you're into quiet strolls through nature or immersive outdoor art (don’t miss the upcoming Lassonde Art Trail , coming by 2026), Biidaasige Park is set to become one of the most inviting spaces in the city.

This place is more than just a park—it’s a symbol of what Toronto can be: greener, more inclusive, and beautifully connected to the natural world. Personally, I can’t wait to experience it myself. Maybe I’ll see you there this weekend?

Let’s welcome a new chapter for our city.
