Blue Jays Hit a Speed Bump as Giménez Sits Out vs Angels

What a week it’s been for the Toronto Blue Jays. Riding a hot six-game winning streak and sitting proudly atop the American League East with a 50-38 record, the Jays have looked like a well-oiled machine lately. But just as momentum seemed unstoppable, Saturday brought a bit of a curveball. Second baseman Andrés Giménez will be missing action against the Los Angeles Angels, and it's all due to an ankle injury that flared up during Friday night’s tight 4-3 win in extra innings.

Giménez had to leave the game in the sixth inning after tweaking his ankle — and as of now, the team is still waiting on MRI results. For the moment, he’s listed as day-to-day, but it’s definitely a concerning development. Even though he’s been batting a modest .218 with five home runs and 23 RBIs this season, his presence in the lineup provides depth and experience, especially defensively. Keep in mind, the Jays acquired Giménez in a key off-season deal with the Cleveland Guardians, sending Spencer Horwitz and Nick Mitchell the other way. It was a trade aimed at bolstering their infield, so any time he's off the field, it's felt.

In response to the injury, Toronto is making some roster adjustments. They’ve called up right-hander Robinson Piña from Triple-A Buffalo. Piña’s been having a solid season in the minors, posting a 3.51 ERA over 39 innings with a 4-3 record split between Buffalo and Jacksonville. He just came over from the Miami Marlins in a recent trade for Colby Martin, so this will be a big moment for him — a chance to make his mark in The Show.

Also worth noting: reliever Yimi Garcia is headed to the 15-day injured list with his own ankle issue. Garcia has been a solid bullpen piece this season, with a 3.86 ERA over 21 innings, but now he’s sidelined too.

So while the Blue Jays are still cruising in the standings, this weekend brings a few challenges. Losing two players to ankle injuries isn't ideal, especially with a big part of the season still ahead. But if there’s anything we’ve seen from this team lately, it’s resilience. The depth and strategy in the roster moves suggest the Jays are still in it to win it — and fans will be hoping this is just a minor speed bump on the road to October.

Let’s see how they respond on the field today without Giménez.
