Bowen Eager Despite Defeat in Summer Clash Against Man United

So, there was a pretty exciting preseason clash recently as West Ham United took on Manchester United over in New Jersey at the iconic MetLife Stadium. Even though the result didn’t quite go West Ham’s way—they lost 2-1—there were plenty of positives to take from the game, especially from West Ham's perspective and their build-up to the new Premier League season.

West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen was full of energy and enthusiasm in the days leading up to the match. He shared how pumped the whole squad was to face United, calling it a “big game” and saying they just couldn’t wait to get out there and play. The team had been in the U.S. for a few days, training at Rutgers University and soaking up the atmosphere, even taking part in community events and fan meetups. Bowen himself had just gotten married in the off-season, so he came into this preseason feeling refreshed and ready to go.

There’s a new vibe around the team too, with Head Coach Graham Potter enjoying his first full preseason with the squad. Bowen mentioned how valuable it has been for the whole team—and especially the manager—to have proper time to prepare and focus on themselves, rather than being thrown straight into matches like during the regular season. The players had a training stint in Germany before coming stateside, and they’ve been building momentum ever since.

Off the pitch, the West Ham squad has really embraced their time in America. Bowen in particular lit up when talking about engaging with young fans and communities—something he clearly values as both a professional and a parent. The players even visited a school in New Jersey to coach kids and attend Premier League events at places like the massive American Dream Mall. Bowen also admitted he’s a fan of American football, so getting to train at Rutgers and see U.S. college facilities was a fun bonus for him.

As for the match itself, Manchester United edged it thanks to a brace from Bruno Fernandes, who looked sharp and clicked quickly with new signing Matheus Cunha. Despite the result, West Ham gave a good account of themselves. Bowen said the team feels like they’re in a strong place and ready for the challenges ahead. They’ve still got two more games in the Summer Series—against Everton and Bournemouth—and Bowen’s hoping to keep progressing and stay healthy ahead of what’s shaping up to be a big season.

In his own words, the goal is simple: stay fit, win games, and put in strong performances for the club. And even though it started with a narrow defeat, this preseason tour looks like it’s setting the stage nicely for West Ham’s 2025/26 campaign.
