Bumrah's Fiery Spell Shakes England at Lord's as Day 2 Delivers Drama
What an electrifying Day 2 at Lord’s in this third Test between England and India! The iconic venue lived up to its reputation, with drama, brilliance, and heartbreak all packed into the first session. England, who began the day with hopes of building a massive first-innings total, were rocked early on by none other than Jasprit Bumrah – who reminded everyone exactly why he's one of the most feared pacers in world cricket.
It all began with Joe Root, England’s rock, bringing up his 37th Test hundred in style – the very first ball of the day was dispatched to the boundary. But what followed was sheer chaos. Bumrah struck with surgical precision. First, it was the England skipper Ben Stokes, bowled for 44 by a peach that sneaked through his defense. And just when England thought it couldn’t get worse, Bumrah cleaned up Root for 104 – an innings that had held the English effort together. Then came a golden duck for Chris Woakes, who walked back without troubling the scorers, dismissed off Bumrah’s next ball. Three wickets in the space of two overs – Bumrah was truly on fire.

The spell didn’t just hurt England’s scoreboard, it sucked the momentum right out of their innings. From a promising position, they suddenly found themselves reeling at 271 for 7. Jamie Smith, however, emerged as a bright spot amidst the ruins. He had a huge slice of luck early on – dropped by KL Rahul when he was on just five – and he's since looked solid, striking five boundaries on his way to an unbeaten 33. Brydon Carse has offered support with a calm 11*, and the two have stitched a much-needed partnership, dragging England to 307/7 by the drinks break.
For India, Bumrah’s figures of 4 for 58 from 23 overs speak volumes, and his discipline – hitting a good length 83% of the time – has been unmatched in the series so far. Siraj and Akash Deep, though wicketless, kept things tight, while Nitish Reddy and Jadeja chipped in with key dismissals. Rishabh Pant, still nursing an external injury, isn't keeping wickets today but is expected to bat if needed.
The crowd was treated not just to intense cricket but also a few celebrity sightings – with none other than Queen guitarist Sir Brian May in the stands, and a cheeky missed opportunity for the commentary team to reference Another One Bites the Dust after the twin dismissals of Root and Woakes.
England will hope Smith and Carse can push them past 350 and set a competitive tone for the bowlers. India, on the other hand, will rue the missed catch but take confidence from their fightback, especially Bumrah’s game-changing spell. With the series level at 1-1, the stakes couldn't be higher, and if today’s action is anything to go by, we’re in for a thrilling ride over the next few days.
