Canada Reopens Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship: What You Need to Know in 2025

Hey everyone, I’ve got some exciting news for families in Canada hoping to reunite with their loved ones. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is reopening the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) this year, starting July 28, 2025. This is a major opportunity for many permanent residents and Canadian citizens who have been waiting for years to sponsor their parents or grandparents to become permanent residents of Canada.

Here’s what’s happening: IRCC will be sending out 17,860 invitations to potential sponsors over a two-week period. But here’s the catch – these invitations are only going to people who submitted their Interest to Sponsor forms back in 2020 . So if you’re hoping to sponsor your parents or grandparents under the PGP, make sure you check the email you used in that 2020 application – including your spam folder – because that’s how you’ll find out if you’ve been invited. The government is targeting to accept 10,000 complete applications from those invitations.

This program is hugely popular because it offers permanent residency and long-term stability for your family members. But because the demand far exceeds the number of available spots, IRCC uses a lottery system to issue invitations. Unfortunately, they are not reopening the interest to sponsor form this year, so if you didn’t apply in 2020, you won’t be eligible for this round. However, don’t worry—there is still another great option.

If you’re not invited this year, the Super Visa might be a great alternative. It allows parents and grandparents to visit Canada for extended stays—up to five years per visit , and it’s valid for up to ten years . There’s no annual cap, and the application process is generally faster. To qualify, your family member must be admissible to Canada, purchase private health insurance, and you must meet certain income requirements.

Now, if you did apply in 2020 and get an invitation this year, it’s time to act fast. The application process is competitive, and you’ll need to prove your financial eligibility by submitting Notices of Assessment from the CRA for the last three tax years: 2022, 2023, and 2024. Depending on your family size, there are specific income thresholds you’ll need to meet. For instance, if your family size is five, your income must have been at least $72,935 in 2022, $75,384 in 2023, and $80,496 in 2024.

The whole process is now done online through the IRCC’s Permanent Residence Portal, so be ready with all the necessary documentation—proof of income, identity documents, relationship evidence, and anything else requested. If you miss anything, your application could be rejected, and with only 10,000 spots available, there’s no room for mistakes.

So to sum it up: the 2025 PGP is opening July 28, but it's only for those in the 2020 interest pool. If you're one of them, keep an eye on your email and prepare now. If you're not, explore the Super Visa route—it might be your best chance at bringing your loved ones to Canada in the near future.

This could be a life-changing moment for many families. Make sure you're prepared, stay informed, and take action. Reuniting with your parents or grandparents in Canada might just be around the corner.
