So, here’s some interesting travel news that’s been making the rounds lately—Canada’s passport has just been ranked the 8th most powerful in the world. This ranking comes from Henley & Partners, a firm based in London that specializes in global citizenship and residence planning. They release a quarterly index called the Henley Passport Index, which basically measures how freely passport holders can travel without needing a visa.

Now, this ranking isn’t just pulled out of a hat. It’s based on data from the International Air Transport Association, or IATA, and looks at how many destinations a passport can get you into either visa-free or with a visa on arrival. As of the latest update in July 2025, a Canadian passport allows entry to 184 countries without needing a visa in advance. That’s a lot of freedom to explore the world.

That said, Canada did slip slightly in the rankings. Back in January 2025, it held the 7th spot and granted access to 188 destinations. So, it’s dropped one position and lost access to a few countries without prior visa requirements. Still, being in the top 10 is impressive—and notably, Canada is now ahead of the United States, which has dropped to the 10th spot, with access to 182 destinations. That’s the first time Canada has outranked the U.S. on this index since it began in 2006.

And here’s something even more striking—if this trend continues, the U.S. might soon fall out of the top 10 altogether, which would be a historic low for them. Back in 2014, the U.S. was actually tied for first place with the U.K. That gives you an idea of how much things have changed in the global travel landscape.

Meanwhile, Singapore continues to dominate the top of the list. Its passport offers access to a staggering 193 destinations, making it the most powerful travel document in the world right now. At the very bottom of the list? Afghanistan, with access to only 25 countries without a visa. It’s a stark reminder of how geopolitical situations and international relationships can shape something as basic as your freedom to travel.

So, while Canada’s passport isn’t at the very top, it’s still among the elite. It continues to be a strong symbol of international access and mobility. Not bad, eh?
