Celebrated Jeweller Sir Michael Hill Passes Away at 86
It’s the end of an era in the world of jewellery and entrepreneurship, as Sir Michael Hill, the iconic founder of Michael Hill Jeweller, has passed away at the age of 86. His death was announced by the company in a heartfelt statement expressing “great sadness,” with sincere condolences extended to his family and friends.
Sir Michael had recently stepped away from his role in April to undergo cancer treatment, a decision that came after decades of being the creative and business force behind the brand that bears his name. Known not just as a jeweller but also as a passionate entrepreneur, philanthropist, and devoted family man, Sir Michael’s legacy is one that will be remembered for generations.

Back in 1979, he and his wife Lady Christine opened the very first Michael Hill store in Whangārei, New Zealand. What started as a small operation quickly grew into an internationally recognised brand. Just a year after launching in New Zealand, the company expanded into Australia, and over time, it blossomed into a network of more than 200 stores across Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
Interestingly, jewellery wasn't his first love—music was. He had dreamt of becoming a concert violinist, but at 17, he was told it was too late to pursue that path professionally. So instead, he took a job at his uncle’s jewellery store, and from there, the seeds of his future empire were planted. His flair for storytelling, visual merchandising, and bold advertising helped transform what could have been just another retail chain into a brand known for innovation and personality.
Michael Hill’s window displays won international awards, and his advertising campaigns were far from traditional—they were daring, visually striking, and impossible to ignore. His vision for design and branding extended all the way into 2024, when the company underwent a major rebrand. The new colours were inspired by his memories of the natural beauty of New Zealand—the beaches, the trees, even the moss.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon paid tribute, noting Sir Michael's aspiration, grit, and the powerful inspiration he gave to generations of Kiwi entrepreneurs. “He built a globally recognised brand from scratch and gave back to the country he loved.”
Sir Michael’s life was filled with purpose, curiosity, and creativity. Even as he stepped back from the company, his influence remained deeply embedded in the brand’s identity. Now, as he’s laid to rest, his vision continues to shine brightly through every store window and every piece of jewellery that bears his name.
