Chaos in Midtown: Shane Tamura’s Rampage Leaves 4 Dead in Manhattan Shooting
So, this is one of those stories that leaves you stunned—tragic, heartbreaking, and still full of unanswered questions. Just yesterday in Midtown Manhattan, right in one of the busiest, most secure parts of the city, a mass shooting unfolded inside an office building on Park Avenue. The shooter was identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura, and by the time it was over, four people were killed—among them an NYPD officer, a senior investment executive, a young Cornell grad, and a beloved security guard.
According to the NYPD, Tamura entered the building carrying an AR-15-style rifle and had a suicide note in his pocket. That note reportedly mentioned CTE—a brain disease often linked to repeated head trauma—and included an apology, saying something like “Study my brain, I’m sorry.” Investigators believe he was actually trying to get to the NFL’s offices in the building, but he took the wrong elevator, ending up on a different floor where the shootings began.

The victims were people simply doing their jobs. Didarul Islam, an off-duty NYPD officer, was working security when he was gunned down. He was a father of two with a third child on the way. His body was honored with a massive showing of support from the NYPD and community at a Bronx mosque. Julia Hyman, just 27, worked for Rudin Management and had graduated from Cornell not long ago. Then there was Wesley LePatner, a managing director at Blackstone—high-ranking, respected, and a mother. And Aland Etienne, the security guard known for his dedication and kindness, was also killed. His brother called him “a light in our lives.”
Police say Tamura died by suicide on the scene after the rampage. He had been on psychiatric holds in 2022 and 2024, and now NYPD investigators are heading to Las Vegas—his hometown—to dig into his background and motive. It's also been revealed that the weapon he used was partially assembled using a restricted part purchased by an associate, and authorities are now questioning that person.
Blackstone, the NFL, and others in the building are now stepping up security, and counseling is being offered to employees. But the scars from this event won’t fade quickly. This was the deadliest shooting in New York City in more than a decade. The randomness, the pain—it’s a reminder of how vulnerable even the most bustling, secure places can be to sudden violence. And behind each name is a family forever changed.
