This weekend in New York’s Shubert Alley was something truly special—Broadway Barks 2025 brought stars, rescue animals, and theatre lovers together for an afternoon that was all heart, joy, and community. And one face that caught the eye this year was none other than Cole Escola, the versatile and brilliantly quirky performer whose rising presence on and off stage made their appearance even more noteworthy.

On July 12, the 27th annual Broadway Barks took over the heart of the theatre district, with the legendary Bernadette Peters and the fabulous Beth Leavel co-hosting the event. Both recently wrapped up performances in the Broadway run of Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends , and their energy was infectious. The alley buzzed with excitement, not only because of the adorable adoptable pets but because of the sheer volume of talent present—including Audra McDonald, Michelle Williams, Orville Peck, and of course, Cole Escola.

For those unfamiliar, Broadway Barks isn’t just a celebrity photo-op; it’s a powerful initiative founded by Peters and the late Mary Tyler Moore to spotlight adoptable cats and dogs from shelters and rescues throughout the NYC area. Each year, Broadway stars step up to introduce these pets, hoping to match them with their forever homes. The success rate? Astoundingly high—over 85% of the animals featured over the past 26 years have found loving homes.

Cole Escola’s appearance felt like the perfect match for the event’s vibe. Known for their fearless comedic voice, emotional depth, and love for the offbeat, Escola brought their usual spark to the stage—and a warmth that made their moments with the animals even more endearing. Whether posing for photos or presenting an adoptable pup to the crowd, they showed genuine enthusiasm and heart, reminding us that theatre people really do have some of the biggest hearts around.

This year’s Broadway Barks was produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and featured pets from over two dozen rescue organizations. From tiny terrier mixes to majestic huskies, the animals were the true stars of the show. The event began with a 3 PM meet-and-greet for attendees to mingle with the pets, followed by the 5 PM celebrity presentations. All of it, of course, was open to the public and completely free to attend.

Escola’s presence among theatre giants like Danny Burstein, Sadie Sink, and David Hyde Pierce shows just how beloved and influential they’ve become in the Broadway world. Whether it’s comedy, drama, or a heartfelt dog adoption drive, Cole Escola delivers every time—with authenticity and flair.
