Deadly Shooting Rocks Reno's Grand Sierra Resort
Earlier this week, a horrifying shooting unfolded outside the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada, shaking the community and claiming the lives of three people while injuring three others. It all started around 7:25 a.m. Monday morning when police received reports of an active shooter outside the casino. Within just a couple of minutes, officers were on the scene — a response time that many say helped prevent an even greater tragedy.
The gunman, armed with a handgun and multiple magazines, was first seen in the parking lot before moving toward the valet area of the resort. According to authorities, his gun initially malfunctioned, but once he managed to fix it, he opened fire on a group of people standing nearby. Five people were hit. Tragically, one of them died on the spot, and another passed away later at the hospital. Two others remain in critical condition, while one has since been treated and released.
After the initial shooting, the suspect ran back into the parking lot where he exchanged fire with a security guard from the resort. Fortunately, that guard was not injured. The gunman then turned his weapon on a person who happened to be driving by, fatally shooting them as well.

When police arrived, the suspect fired at officers, even hitting a patrol vehicle. An officer-involved shooting followed — several Reno police officers returned fire, hitting the suspect and bringing him down. He was taken into custody and transported to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Officials say there is no indication that the gunman knew any of the victims, and no motive has been identified so far. Police have described the incident as a senseless rampage. Investigators, led by the Sparks Police Department, are still combing through evidence, and as of now, the identities of the victims and the suspect have not been released.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic. One woman, who was leaving the resort with her mother-in-law, said she saw the shooter drop a black bag before opening fire. The two women dropped their luggage and ran to their car for safety. She also recalled seeing children standing just feet away from the suspect when the shooting began.
Officials from the Grand Sierra Resort confirmed that no employees were harmed and praised their security team for acting quickly to prevent more loss of life. The resort has remained open and is working to support any guests or team members affected by the incident.
As investigations continue, the community mourns the lives lost and hopes for the recovery of those still in the hospital. Leaders and residents alike have voiced their sorrow and frustration — calling once again for action to address the ongoing issue of gun violence in public spaces.
