Drivers Caught Filming Serious Crash on A14 Near Stowmarket
So, earlier today, a serious accident took place on the A14 near Stowmarket that caused quite a bit of disruption. Two lorries were involved in the crash—one of them was reportedly a petrol tanker—and the collision led to a significant petrol spill. Emergency services were quickly called to the scene, and the situation became serious enough that the entire westbound carriageway was shut down. Initially, both directions were closed, but the eastbound side has since been reopened.
The crash happened between junction 47A for Woolpit and junction 51 at Needham Market, and it caused major traffic delays across the area. According to reports, police, fire crews, and paramedics were all in attendance. It’s still unclear whether anyone was seriously injured, but given the nature of the crash and the involvement of hazardous materials, it’s being treated with extreme caution.

Now, here's where things took a disappointing turn. While emergency responders were doing their best to manage the accident and ensure public safety, some passing drivers were seen filming the crash scene on their phones. Suffolk Police issued a strong warning, stating that action will be taken against anyone caught doing this. They emphasized that not only is it dangerous to be distracted while driving, but it's also disrespectful to those involved in the incident—especially while emergency crews are trying to manage what could potentially be a life-threatening situation.
This isn't just a minor infraction. Using a phone while driving, particularly to film something as sensitive as a serious accident, can carry legal consequences and poses risks to everyone on the road. Authorities are urging drivers to focus on the road and not on their cameras.
National Highways put a diversion in place to help ease congestion, but long queues still backed up as far as Claydon near Ipswich. So if you were heading through that area today, chances are you got caught in the gridlock.
It's a reminder of how quickly situations on major roads like the A14 can turn critical—and how important it is to act responsibly, whether you're directly involved or just passing by.
