Dubrovnik – The Fairytale City with Flavors of the Sea and Views to Steal Your Breath
Imagine soaring through the clouds and catching your first glimpse of Dubrovnik, nestled on the Adriatic coast with its iconic terracotta rooftops glowing under the Mediterranean sun. From the air, it looks too perfect to be real—like stepping into a dream or flying straight into the pages of a postcard. That’s how my adventure began, and from the moment we landed, Dubrovnik didn’t just meet expectations—it completely redefined them.
We started high above the city, atop Mount Srd. At 412 meters above sea level, the view from there is nothing short of cinematic. You get the entire Old Town laid out below—its medieval walls wrapping around tightly packed stone buildings, all set against the endless blue of the sea. We treated ourselves to a cold drink at the Panorama Restaurant, where £6 buys you a Coke and an hour of serene people-watching from the best seat in the city. And then, a breezy cable car ride whisked us back down into the storybook streets.

Down in the bustling harbor, fishing boats return with the morning’s catch—squid, John Dory, whatever the Adriatic has generously offered that day. These are rushed straight to Dubrovnik’s many seafood restaurants. We tried Portun, just near the city gates, where we were spoiled with garlicky fish, octopus salad, and plump prawn-filled ravioli. A chocolate fondant sealed the deal—all for just £33.
Wandering the cobbled streets of the Old Town is like stepping back in time. Baroque churches and shaded squares whisper stories from the 7th century. We explored every alleyway before hopping on a short boat ride to Lokrum Island—just 10 minutes away but a whole new world. Wild peacocks roam freely, a saltwater lake glistens between trees, and a Benedictine monastery watches over the island since 1023. It was peaceful, lush, and unforgettable.
Later that evening, we joined the locals at Aroma for gelato—salted pistachio, naturally, and worth every minute of the queue. For dinner, we tucked into Margherita pizzas and a chilled bottle of Croatian Graševina at Pizzeria Castro in lively Gundulić Square. But the real highlight came next—Buza Bar. Hidden behind the city walls and perched above the sea, it’s where we watched the sunset with local wine in hand, while daring teenagers leaped from cliffs into the crystal-clear water below. Magical doesn’t quite cover it.
We stayed at the Rixos Premium Dubrovnik, a cliffside five-star gem with sweeping sea views, a Jacuzzi bath, and the kind of breakfast buffet dreams are made of—don’t skip the sheep’s cheese. The next morning, we snorkeled in what has been named the cleanest seawater in all of Europe. We spotted crabs, watched octopuses weave through rocks, and toasted the experience with a cold Ožujsko lager and shrimp Caesar salad on the deck.
As night fell over Sunset Beach, serenaded by violinists under a glowing full moon, I couldn’t help but think—this isn’t just a destination. Dubrovnik is a feeling, a moment in time you never want to end.
