Tony was one of those rare individuals whose life was entirely dedicated to show business. You may know him from his appearances in the long-running ITV soap Coronation Street , where he took on three separate roles — a delivery man, a junk dealer, and most notably Peter Mallett, the father of Gary Mallett. But his presence stretched far beyond the cobbled streets of Weatherfield. He also appeared in Emmerdale , Heartbeat , and All Creatures Great and Small , and had his final TV credit in Last of the Summer Wine back in 2004.
His journey began in the 1960s, entertaining crowds at Butlins. From there, his path took him through comedy clubs, theatres, and eventually to the heart of Scarborough, where he made a lasting mark as a producer of pantomimes and summer shows. He created Tony Peers Productions in 1999 and led thousands of performances at the Scarborough Spa, where his name became synonymous with laughter, warmth, and theatrical magic. More than 2,500 shows were produced under his guidance — that’s a legacy measured not only in numbers but in moments of joy shared by audiences across the UK.
One of the most touching aspects of Tony’s story was his relationship with his mother. He once recalled how she cried all the way home after watching his early performance, worried he wouldn’t make a living in entertainment. Ironically, she would later beam with pride, showing neighbours TV guides with her son's name in them. That anecdote tells you everything you need to know about Tony — a man who proved the doubters wrong through passion, persistence, and genuine talent.
Tony’s personal life was just as meaningful. He often said his long-time partner Glenda kept him grounded. In his own words, “Everyone in this business is an insecure, self-absorbed egomaniac… Glenda taught me there’s more to life than dressing up and messing about. Family is what it’s all about.” That sentiment now hits even harder. He wasn’t just a performer. He was a deeply thoughtful man who saw the world with perspective.
Tony’s company, Tony Peers Ltd, shared the news of his passing with the heartfelt message: “It is with great sadness that we announce that Scarborough showbiz legend Tony Peers has taken his final bow... and in Tony’s words, ‘the show must go on.’” And it will — through the productions he inspired, the artists he mentored, and the countless people who will continue to carry his spirit forward.
So here’s to Tony — the man who made magic from laughter, built community from curtain calls, and never forgot that the real spotlight in life shines brightest on love, humility, and legacy. Thank you, Tony. The stage won’t be the same without you.
