From Benchwarmer to Legend: Lucas Zayac’s Unstoppable Rise
Let me tell you about someone who’s become the talk of the town—Capuchino High’s very own Lucas Zayac. He’s just been named the San Mateo Daily Journal’s Boys’ Athlete of the Year , and it’s no surprise once you hear what this guy has accomplished.
Lucas didn’t start high school as a star. In fact, he walked into Capuchino as just a baseball kid—no football experience, no real plans for basketball. But four years later, he’s leaving as one of the school’s most celebrated all-around athletes.

What’s crazy is that football wasn’t even on his radar. His mom was actually against the idea. But, wanting him to make some friends, she let him try it. Turns out, that decision changed everything. Even as a smaller freshman—just 5'9" and 190 pounds—he stood out. Coaches saw his potential right away. By his sophomore year, he was making waves, and by his senior year, he had become a dominant force on the field. We’re talking over 1,000 rushing yards, nearly 200 receiving, 17 touchdowns, and the title of Offensive Player of the Year in one of the toughest divisions around.
But football was only part of the story.
Lucas also found his way onto the basketball court. He wasn’t the next Steph Curry or anything—he mostly played for fun and to stay in shape for baseball. Still, he worked his way from the end of the bench to the starting five in his senior year. That just speaks volumes about his mindset. He wasn’t chasing stats—he just wanted to contribute and grow. As he put it himself, "I like to go out and prove myself."
Now, baseball? That’s where Lucas really shined. He started as a shortstop but moved to catcher in eighth grade. He never had formal training—just YouTube, backyard reps with his dad, and a whole lot of heart. By the time he hit his senior year, he was batting .456, collecting 47 hits and helping lead Capuchino to its first-ever Central Coast Section title.
His coaches will tell you—he might not be the biggest or fastest, but what he has can’t be taught: heart, hustle, and a team-first attitude. One even said if you put Lucas’s heart in a 6’5” frame, he’d be getting drafted to the pros.
So yeah, Lucas Zayac isn’t just the Athlete of the Year because of what he did—he’s the Athlete of the Year because of how he did it. Quietly, humbly, and always for the team.
