Giants Storm Past Eagles in Commanding Round 17 Win
What a clash it was at Optus Stadium in Round 17 of the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season — West Coast Eagles taking on the Greater Western Sydney Giants. From the very first bounce, this game had an intensity that reminded us of what top-tier footy is all about, but ultimately, it was the Giants who controlled the tempo and walked away with a convincing win.
Right from the start, GWS looked like the more structured and composed side. Their ball movement was clean, and their transition from defence to attack was clinical. The Eagles, on the other hand, seemed to struggle with cohesion, particularly through the midfield where the Giants continually found space and punished them on the rebound.

Jesse Hogan and Toby Greene were instrumental for GWS. Hogan's presence inside 50 gave the Giants a strong target, and Greene — well, he was doing what Greene does best, creating havoc with his pressure and scoreboard impact. It’s no surprise the Giants looked dangerous every time they surged forward.
For West Coast, there were some glimmers of hope. Oscar Allen fought hard up forward, and Tim Kelly tried to lift the midfield, but it was an uphill battle. The Eagles were simply outplayed when it mattered most. Their defence couldn’t contain the Giants’ forward entries, and too often, turnovers in critical areas hurt their chances of mounting any sustained pressure.
By halftime, the margin had already ballooned and the writing was on the wall. The Giants maintained their momentum right through the final quarter, never letting the Eagles find a rhythm. It was a professional, commanding performance by a team that’s starting to look more and more like a genuine contender.
The final siren blew and GWS walked off with another vital four points. This result will sting for West Coast fans, who were hoping for a strong showing at home. But for GWS, it’s another tick on a season that is gaining real traction.
That’s footy. One team walks off satisfied, the other left with more questions than answers.
