Gunfire Erupts in Chicago, Wounds Multiple in River North and Englewood
It’s been another harrowing night in Chicago. As we woke up to enjoy the day, devastating news broke from two separate neighborhoods—River North and Englewood—where multiple people were wounded in separate shootings, shaking the city yet again with scenes of panic, trauma, and unanswered questions.
Let’s begin with the River North incident. On the evening of July 2nd, gunfire erupted at Artis Restaurant and Lounge, located on Chicago Avenue. Details from the Chicago Police Department remain scarce, but what we know is that multiple people were shot. Officer Julio Garcia confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, and more updates are expected. Emergency teams responded swiftly, and Northwestern Medicine confirmed that their ER team was treating several individuals. However, there is no confirmation yet on the exact number of victims or their medical conditions.

Then, just a little earlier in the evening, a second disturbing event unfolded in Ogden Park, in the Englewood community. Around 6:52 p.m., three people—two men and a woman—were gunned down while walking in the park. The victims, aged 25, 32, and 37, were struck by bullets in the chest, legs, and throughout the body, leaving them in serious condition. They were immediately transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center.
This second shooting happened dangerously close to a children's playground and an outdoor public pool—where kids were seen nearby, enjoying the summer evening. That image—children in swimsuits just steps away from a scene of chaos—is a chilling reminder of how deeply embedded gun violence has become in the city’s daily life.
What’s even more troubling is that no arrests have been made in either incident as of now. Detectives from the Wentworth Area are investigating the Englewood shooting, and River North authorities are still piecing together what led to the bloodshed at the restaurant.
Two separate locations, one night, and yet a familiar story for Chicago—a city grappling with gun violence that seems relentless. These incidents aren't just about statistics or crime reports—they’re about real people whose lives were forever altered in the blink of an eye. Until the city confronts the root causes—whether they be poverty, community disconnection, access to illegal weapons, or systemic challenges—these tragedies will keep cycling through our headlines, our neighborhoods, and our hearts.
So tonight, we’re left asking again: how many more nights like this must we endure before meaningful change finally arrives?
