Heartbreak in Ibiza: Remembering Ice Hockey Star Gary Kelly

I can’t believe I’m even saying this, but the news has hit like a punch to the gut. Gary Kelly, one of Scottish ice hockey’s brightest young stars, has tragically passed away at just 19 years old. It happened in the early hours of Monday morning, July 21st, while he was on holiday at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in San Antonio. Spanish authorities have confirmed that Gary fell from a third-floor balcony, and sadly, despite efforts from emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gary was more than just a rising athlete—he was full of promise, energy, and heart. Starting off with the Dundee Stars junior program and even representing Scotland at U17 level, he was already carving out a serious future in the sport. Most recently, he played for the Aberdeen Lynx and had also laced up for the Dundee Rockets. Teammates, coaches, and fans alike saw him as one of the most exciting young talents coming through the ranks.

What makes this even more chilling is that Gary’s death comes just weeks after another Scottish man, Evan Thomson, also tragically died at the same hotel. Ibiza Rocks, known for its vibrant party scene, has since suspended all upcoming events out of respect and is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. The Guardia Civil have said that early findings point to an accident, but an autopsy and further inquiries are still underway.

Clubs and fans have poured out their grief and tributes across social media. The Dundee Stars described Gary as a “hugely talented and charismatic individual,” adding that everyone in the organization is heartbroken. The Aberdeen Lynx went even deeper, saying Gary wasn’t just a skilled player, but a young man who brought “energy, kindness, and an infectious love of life” to everything he did.

Honestly, it’s hard to find the right words. This isn’t just the loss of a talented athlete—it’s the loss of a son, a friend, a teammate, a human being who had so much more to give. His spirit, his laugh, his fire on the ice—it’s what made him unforgettable.

Our hearts go out to Gary’s family, his partner, his teammates, and everyone who knew and loved him. May they find strength in the memories and in the love pouring out from the entire hockey community and beyond.

Rest in peace, Gary. You’ll be missed more than words can ever say.
