Hodge Urges Silvagni to Join Collingwood Despite Carlton Ties
There’s a pretty big talking point in the AFL world right now surrounding Jack Silvagni—and it’s not just about his injury status or form. It’s about where he’ll be playing next year. Despite his deep roots with Carlton, there’s growing speculation that he might actually be on the move, and not just anywhere, but to arch-rivals Collingwood.
So here’s the deal. Jack Silvagni, a name closely tied to the Carlton Football Club—thanks to his grandfather Serge and his father Stephen, both legends of the Navy Blues—has received a significant offer from the Pies. According to reliable reports from SEN’s Sam Edmund and the Herald Sun , Collingwood has thrown their hat in the ring with a tempting contract that reportedly exceeds $700,000 per season for the next four years. Compare that to Carlton’s current offer and, financially, it looks like Collingwood is winning this battle.

Now, Silvagni is an unrestricted free agent, which means if he decides to make the switch, Collingwood wouldn’t need to negotiate a trade. He can walk straight into their lineup without any hoops for the Pies to jump through.
This whole scenario was discussed recently on SEN’s Crunch Time , where Dermott Brereton pointed out that there’s definitely a lot for Silvagni to consider. But former Hawthorn captain and footy legend Luke Hodge didn’t hesitate to give his take—he thinks it’s a no-brainer. According to Hodge, the decision should be crystal clear, especially when comparing where both clubs are at right now.
Carlton, in his eyes, is in a bit of a mess. He pointed out how the Blues have gone from a preliminary final appearance a couple of seasons ago to a team that now looks disjointed, where players seem lost, unsure about their coaching direction, and changes are looming in management. On the flip side, Collingwood is sitting on top of the ladder, playing consistent finals footy, and offering Silvagni not only more money but also a stable, successful environment.
As Hodge put it, loyalty is important, but so is the opportunity to compete for a premiership in a stable club. Unless Carlton can suddenly match the Pies’ offer—or offer him a clearer path to success—Hodge reckons the only logical move is across town.
Silvagni has only played 13 games this season and hasn’t featured since Round 16 due to a groin injury. His return is still listed as “to be confirmed,” so whether we see him in Navy Blue again remains to be seen. But if this offer from Collingwood is real—and it looks like it is—the next chapter of his career could be played in black and white.
