India Roar Back to Level the Series as Gill and Deep Shine at Edgbaston

What a comeback from Team India! After a disappointing loss in the first Test, the Men in Blue roared back in style to level the series 1-1 against England, with three games still to play. The second Test at Edgbaston turned out to be a one-sided affair, and it was all thanks to a dominant batting performance and a sensational bowling display led by Akash Deep.

Let’s talk about Shubman Gill for a moment. The young Indian captain played with the poise of a veteran, leading from the front and setting the tone with a superb knock. His command over the innings, timing, and ability to read the game was simply top class. But while Gill anchored the batting, it was Akash Deep who stole the show with the ball. Without Jasprit Bumrah in the side, many questioned how India’s attack would cope. Deep answered those doubts with a stunning 10-wicket haul in the match, including a fiery 6-99 in the second innings that broke England’s resistance.

England’s decision to bowl first raised eyebrows, especially as conditions eased up after the first session. India made the most of that decision by piling on a massive 587 in their first innings. In contrast, England failed to capitalize when they had India at 200-5. Once that opportunity slipped, it was one-way traffic. Despite brief resistance from Jamie Smith and Harry Brook, India’s bowlers kept coming, relentless and disciplined.

Credit where it’s due—Smith and Brook played beautifully under pressure, showcasing talent and grit. But India were just better in every department. Their fielding improved, their batting was deep, and their bowlers knew exactly what to do on a surface that slowly turned into a paradise for patient cricket. Shubman Gill’s leadership and Deep’s heroics proved to be the perfect combination.

Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum admitted post-match that some decisions backfired—most notably the toss. England’s inability to finish off the Indian innings when they had a sniff of control was costly. They’ll need a fresh mindset heading into Lord’s, where Jasprit Bumrah is expected to return. That’s another headache for England, who now also welcome Gus Atkinson and possibly Jofra Archer into the fold.

So, with the series now finely poised at 1-1, all eyes turn to the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. Can England bounce back with answers, or will India keep the momentum going? Either way, this series just got even more exciting.
