INXS Crowned with Australia's All-Time Favourite Song
So, something pretty amazing just happened in the world of Aussie music. After a nationwide vote involving more than 2.6 million passionate music lovers, the song Never Tear Us Apart by INXS has officially been named the greatest Australian song of all time in Triple J’s special Hottest 100 of Australian Songs.
This isn’t just some casual honour—it’s a huge moment for both the band and for fans across generations. Released back in 1987, Never Tear Us Apart was written by the late Michael Hutchence, and it’s since become one of those rare tracks that never seems to age. Whether it’s playing during a wedding, a dramatic movie scene, or booming through stadium speakers before a footy match, this song just hits you in the heart every time.
The power of the song comes from Hutchence’s haunting vocals, the emotional lyrics, and of course, that unforgettable saxophone solo. Seriously, who can resist that moment when the sax kicks in? The song has always been one of INXS’s most beloved anthems, but now it’s officially been given its crown.

What’s also interesting is that Need You Tonight , another INXS classic, made it into the countdown too—coming in at #59. Clearly, their legacy is still very much alive.
The rest of the top 10 was packed with iconic names too. Hilltop Hoods landed at #2 with The Nosebleed Section , followed by The Veronicas with Untouched —an unofficial anthem for many in the LGBTQIA+ community. Missy Higgins, Powderfinger, Cold Chisel (with two entries!), Paul Kelly, and Gotye also made the list, reflecting the deep emotional connection Australians have with their homegrown sounds.
This special countdown was sparked, in part, by the fact that Australian acts made up just 29% of this year’s regular Hottest 100—a sharp drop from previous years. It’s something that’s kicked off a wider conversation about how local artists can be better supported in a globalised, algorithm-driven music industry.
But on this day, at least, Aussie music was front and centre. And it’s clear that Never Tear Us Apart isn’t just a song—it’s a part of who we are. It's a reminder of the depth, power, and timelessness of Australian music, and why we keep coming back to it again and again.
