Jess Carter Speaks Out Against Racial Abuse During Euro 2025
I want to take a moment to talk about something that’s really been weighing heavily on the football world — and that’s the heartbreaking situation involving England defender Jess Carter. During what should be a moment of national pride and focus on football at Euro 2025, Carter has instead found herself at the center of something ugly and unacceptable: racial abuse.
From the very beginning of the tournament, Jess has been subjected to a stream of racist messages online — vile, personal attacks targeting her race and appearance rather than her performance on the pitch. And let me be clear: no player, no human being, should ever have to endure that. Critique about football is one thing. Racism is another. There is no justification. None.
Jess took to Instagram to share her experience, saying, “From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse.” She’s made the decision to step away from social media, not out of defeat, but as a way to protect her well-being and focus on supporting her teammates as they fight to bring the trophy home. She’s leaving the social media noise to a team of people so she can stay mentally strong — something we should absolutely respect.

The Football Association didn’t hesitate to act. They’ve contacted UK police and are working closely with social media platforms to identify and hold the abusers accountable. And it’s not just the FA taking a stand. Gotham FC, Jess’s club in the U.S., issued a powerful statement calling the abuse heartbreaking and unacceptable. Her England teammates, including Lotte Wubben-Moy, have shown solidarity by also stepping away from social media. And leaders like Lucy Bronze have voiced their sadness and anger, stating plainly that racism is still too present — even at the highest levels of the game.
One significant outcome of all this: the Lionesses have decided to stop taking the knee before matches. It’s a symbolic shift, not a retreat from anti-racism — but a statement that new, more effective actions are urgently needed. They’ve stood, quite literally, and said that what’s being done isn’t enough.
Carter’s resilience throughout the tournament has been incredible. She’s played every game, moving across defensive positions, even under scrutiny. And despite all this, she says her focus remains on the team and helping them however she can.
Jess said something that really struck a chord: she hopes that by speaking out, she’ll make people think twice before posting hateful things, so others won’t have to go through the same pain. That is strength. That is leadership.
So, as fans, as followers of the beautiful game, we have a choice. We can be silent or we can stand up. Jess Carter stood up. Now it’s time we do too. Because racism has no place — not in football, not in life, not anywhere.
