Katherine Parkinson Joins Harry Potter Reboot, Steers Clear of Transgender Debate

Katherine Parkinson, the talented British actress known for her standout role in The IT Crowd , has stepped into the wizarding world of Harry Potter – but she’s making it very clear she has no intention of wading into the ongoing controversy surrounding the franchise’s creator, J.K. Rowling.

Parkinson will portray the beloved character Molly Weasley in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, which is set to stream on Max. The series is a reboot, re-adapting Rowling’s original books over multiple seasons with a new cast and fresh creative direction. While the project is highly anticipated by fans, it’s also been met with mixed reactions – largely due to Rowling’s ongoing public statements on transgender issues, which have sparked backlash from LGBTQ+ communities and allies.

When asked directly about the controversy and whether it influenced her decision to join the show, Parkinson remained firm yet diplomatic. “I don’t want to add to that debate at all,” she told RadioTimes.com . “I’m just delighted to be joining the magical world of Harry Potter.” It’s a statement that carefully sidesteps the politics while focusing on the artistic opportunity the role presents.

Interestingly, Parkinson’s casting also raised eyebrows because of her past work with The IT Crowd creator Graham Linehan, who is himself a controversial figure regarding transgender discourse. However, Parkinson didn’t engage with any speculation or draw parallels between the two projects.

She was also candid about the practical side of joining the series. Molly Weasley, while an iconic and fan-favorite character, doesn’t feature heavily in the early part of the story. Parkinson noted that her involvement won’t significantly interfere with her ongoing work on other series, like BBC’s Here We Go and Disney+’s Rivals . “My character isn’t in it that much until, I think, series 4,” she said, with a humorous nod to her long-standing desire to “work as little as possible.”

Parkinson also highlighted the logistical convenience of filming at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, which is close to her other commitments. “I’m hoping I’ll be very free to do whatever I want,” she added with a smile.

Her approach reflects a broader pattern among some actors in the franchise – navigating the line between engaging in public debates and simply doing their jobs. Some, like Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, have publicly distanced themselves from Rowling’s views, while others, like Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter, have expressed support for the author.

Meanwhile, Parkinson's co-star in the reboot, Paapa Essiedu – cast as Snape – recently signed an open letter in support of trans rights following a UK court ruling about the legal definition of “woman.” Rowling later clarified on social media that she has no control over casting decisions and wouldn’t remove actors for their beliefs, even if they differ from hers.

All this underscores how the upcoming Harry Potter series sits at the intersection of nostalgia, artistry, and socio-political tension. And while Parkinson is thrilled to be a part of the magic, she’s made it clear: she’s here to act, not debate.
