LAFC Hosts Portland in High-Stakes Western Clash at BMO Stadium
Friday night’s matchup at BMO Stadium between LAFC and the Portland Timbers promises more than just three points—it’s a test of depth, form, and momentum as the 2025 MLS season heats up. Set under the lights at 7:30 p.m., this game isn’t just another stop on the calendar; it could shape the playoff landscape in the Western Conference.
LAFC, currently fifth in the standings, has been riding an impressive streak. In their last 14 league matches, they’ve lost only once, with seven wins and six draws. That stretch has seen them outscore opponents 31-17, showing just how lethal they’ve been in transition. But last week’s 3-3 draw against their crosstown rivals, the LA Galaxy, was a reminder that even the strongest runs can end in disappointment if games aren’t closed out. A last-gasp equalizer cost them two valuable points, and to make matters worse, center back Eddie Segura was shown red late in the game. With captain Aaron Long already sidelined for the season, LAFC’s backline is now thin—leaving Nkosi Tafari, a standout recent addition from Dallas, as the only center back with real minutes this season. Rookie Kenny Nielsen may be called upon to step in.

The pressure is on, but so is the confidence. LAFC has been strong at home and will be looking to bounce back quickly, especially with support from veteran goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris. And up top, all eyes remain on Denis Bouanga. The All-Star forward leads the team in both goals (13) and assists (7), and if he can keep his pace, he could make MLS history by becoming the first player to score 20+ goals in three consecutive seasons.
As for Portland, they’re not far behind. Just two points separate the Timbers and LAFC, although Portland has played two more matches. The Timbers have struggled away from home this year, with only three road wins, and their recent goal-scoring form has dipped noticeably. Since mid-June, they’ve managed just 12 goals in 13 games—a slump largely tied to the absence of top scorer Antony, who’s been out with a hamstring injury. Even so, there was a bright moment last weekend when Omir Fernández netted a late equalizer at home to salvage a draw against Minnesota, capping off a festive night celebrating the club’s 50th anniversary.
If Portland hopes to steal a result in LA, they’ll need forwards Felipe Mora and Kevin Kelsy to rediscover their early-season form—and take full advantage of any cracks in LAFC’s makeshift backline.
One thing’s for sure: this game won’t be short on storylines.
