M60 Chaos: Multi-Vehicle Crash Brings Greater Manchester Motorway to a Standstill
So here's what’s going on in Greater Manchester today—and it's causing major chaos. The M60 motorway, a critical ring road around Manchester, has been completely shut down in both directions following a massive crash. It’s not just your typical fender bender—this one involved eight vehicles, including four lorries and four cars. The incident happened between Junction 25 at the Bredbury Interchange and Junction 1 at the Pyramid Roundabout in Stockport, right during the rush hour window.
From what police and National Highways have reported, one of the HGVs ploughed through the central reservation, taking out lamp posts and crashing into oncoming traffic. Another shed its entire load—barrels of beer—right across the tarmac. On top of that, there were ruptured fuel tanks from multiple lorries, spilling diesel all over both carriageways. You can imagine the mess—metal debris, shattered glass, beer kegs rolling around, and a slick of fuel making everything even more dangerous.

Emergency services rushed to the scene: Greater Manchester Police, Manchester Fire and Rescue, and North West Ambulance Service all responded swiftly. According to official updates, three people were taken to hospital, while six others were treated on the spot for minor injuries. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities reported so far.
But the incident’s impact on traffic? Massive. Delays in both directions are stretching for miles, and National Highways says the road is expected to remain closed for a "substantial amount of time" due to the damage caused—not just to vehicles, but to road infrastructure. Several lamp posts were taken out, and fuel spillage cleanup isn’t something that can be rushed. Recovery teams are on-site working hard, but it’s not a quick fix.
Motorists are being diverted using designated routes, with clear signage in place. The clockwise diversion takes drivers off at Junction 25, through the A560, then loops back on at Junction 1. Anti-clockwise travelers have their own detour via the A5145 and the same A560, depending on the direction. Still, everyone is being urged to plan ahead, expect delays, and—if they can—avoid the area altogether.
For those heading to Manchester Airport or just trying to get across town, it’s a frustrating disruption. But it’s also a sobering reminder of how quickly road conditions can change. A single HGV crossing a central barrier can bring one of the UK's busiest motorways to a complete halt.
So if you're in the area or planning a journey that touches the M60, check your route, stay updated, and give yourself extra time. And if you’re caught in that traffic—hang in there. Emergency services are doing everything they can to clear it safely and as fast as possible.
