Magpies Dominate Carlton in 135th Rivalry Win at the MCG
Friday night at the MCG had that old-school blockbuster energy — Collingwood and Carlton locking horns in a clash steeped in history and passion. And once again, the Pies came out on top, securing their 135th win over the Blues in their long-standing rivalry, out of 268 total meetings. The final score read 17.13 (115) to 8.11 (59), a 56-point thrashing that only widened the gap between these two powerhouses.
It started competitively enough — Carlton were only one straight kick behind at quarter time, giving their fans just a flicker of belief. But what followed was a textbook example of Collingwood’s polished, pressure-first football. From the second quarter onwards, the Magpies steamrolled their way to an eighth consecutive win, thanks to a blend of sharp foot skills, relentless tackling, and sheer composure under fire.
Carlton, on the other hand, looked disjointed and reactive. There were moments of promise, particularly from Zac Williams who booted three goals, but his night was cut short with a shin injury that saw him subbed out at three-quarter time. From defence to attack, the Blues struggled to find any rhythm. They were often left chasing shadows as Collingwood’s structures held strong and their midfielders delivered with purpose.

Defensively, Collingwood were near flawless. Isaac Quaynor and Darcy Moore were brick walls in the back half, intercepting with poise and launching counterattacks with surgical precision. So confident were the Pies that Jeremy Howe was subbed out with over a quarter left to play, a luxury only a dominant team can afford.
At the other end, it was a feast. Dan McStay and Jamie Elliott both nailed four goals each, with Elliott’s performance especially memorable — bringing his season tally to a personal best of 41 goals. Mihocek and Membrey added two apiece, and even Nick Daicos chimed in with one of his own to go with 36 disposals and seven clearances. His brother Josh was just as influential, racking up 27 touches and over 500 metres gained.
The pressure game was suffocating. Collingwood recorded 13 tackles inside 50 from 60 entries, constantly keeping Carlton’s defenders under the pump. Mitch McGovern, tasked with tracking Elliott, often looked a step behind, unable to keep pace with the ball movement slicing through the Blues' backline.
And while the result stung for Carlton fans, the rivalry isn’t over. These two clubs will open the AFLW season in August, marking another chapter in their storied feud. With top draft pick Ash Centra lining up for the Pies and Sophie McKay for the Blues, the next generation is ready to write its own history.
But for now, this one belongs to Collingwood — yet again.
