Major Disruptions Ahead: M4 Closures Set to Impact Welsh Drivers
If you're planning to travel on the M4 or nearby routes over the coming weeks, brace yourself for some significant disruption. A series of road closures, resurfacing works, and maintenance operations are set to affect thousands of drivers right across Wales—especially around Cardiff, Pyle, and beyond. So, it’s really important that we plan ahead, check diversions, and allow extra time for journeys.
Let’s start with one of the biggest updates: the M4 is undergoing critical resurfacing work in both directions between junctions 30 (Cardiff Gate) and 32 (Coryton). Eastbound closures will be in effect nightly from July 15 through to August 12, between 8pm and 6am. Meanwhile, westbound closures—already ongoing since June 24—will wrap up on July 15, operating on the same night schedule. Diversions are in place, but they’re expected to increase travel times, so best avoid those stretches if you can.
Now, further west between junctions 37 and 38 near Pyle, we’re seeing a large-scale infrastructure project underway. This six-month job started on June 9 and involves refurbishment of five bridges along the M4. It’s designed to bolster the motorway’s long-term resilience, but for now, it means more roadworks, narrower lanes, and slower speeds.

And that’s not all. A key update for heavy goods vehicle drivers: there’s a 7.5-tonne weight restriction in place on the M48 Severn Bridge due to essential bridge maintenance. Lorries are being diverted, which may cause extra congestion around Chepstow and Aust.
There’s also a contraflow and roadworks system on the A40 near Monmouth that’s already causing tailbacks. Drivers on this route should be ready for longer delays, especially during peak hours.
Away from the motorways, other long-term closures are set to continue well into 2026. In Wrexham, the A534 Holt Road eastbound is shut until May 6, 2026, while Park Road is also closed until July 24. Over in Powys, the B4393 will remain closed until April 3 next year. And in Denbighshire, the B5429 is shut both ways until October 23.
To add to the chaos, emergency incidents are making things worse. Over the weekend, a car burst into flames on the M4 westbound near Newport, just past the Severn Bridge. Emergency services responded quickly, moving the vehicle to the hard shoulder and limiting lane usage, but delays of up to 10 minutes were still reported. On top of that, a lorry fire between junctions 12 and 13 near Reading closed the westbound M4 today and even affected the eastbound side due to thick smoke.
So, whether you’re commuting, heading to the coast, or simply driving across Wales, you need to stay informed. Check traffic updates regularly, use alternative routes when available, and above all—drive safely and patiently. These roadworks are here to improve our infrastructure, but in the short term, they’ll definitely test our patience.
