Marin Cilic’s Wimbledon Comeback Gathers Steam in 2025
If you're a tennis fan like me, you’ll appreciate just how impressive Marin Cilic’s journey at Wimbledon this year has been. It’s 2025, and Cilic is once again turning heads at the All England Club—eight years after his unforgettable run to the final back in 2017. While many had written him off due to injuries and age, he’s proving that class is permanent.
Cilic’s campaign began with a solid first-round win over Grand Slam debutant Raphael Collignon. Collignon, ranked 87 in the world, is a promising Belgian talent, but the gulf in experience on grass was obvious. In fact, this was Collignon’s first appearance at a major, and he hadn't played a match on grass since 2023. His limited preparation showed, and it didn’t help that he had recently withdrawn from a match in Hamburg and missed the French Open entirely. Although he's had some success on the Challenger Tour, he wasn’t ready for a player of Cilic’s pedigree.

Cilic came into Wimbledon off the back of a strong Challenger title win in Nottingham, where he defeated Shintaro Mochizuki in straight sets. That victory marked his return to form, and with five straight wins leading into Wimbledon, he looked ready to compete. Against Collignon, he showed no signs of rust, comfortably dispatching him just as he had earlier this year in Lugano.
But it’s what followed that truly signaled Cilic’s intent. He beat Jaume Munar in four sets—6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4—in a match that tested his resilience. He saved 80% of the break points he faced, a testament to his composure and tactical smarts. That win propelled him into the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time since his 2017 run.
Now he’s set to face Flavio Cobolli, a young Italian who has been enjoying his best ever run at a Slam. Cobolli cruised past Jakub Mensik in straight sets and has beaten Cilic before—most recently in the first round of the French Open this year. But grass is a whole different game. Cilic is more at home on this surface, and he’s starting to look like the powerful, precise server that once reached the very top of the sport.
This match-up promises to be tighter than their last encounter, especially since Cilic is rediscovering his rhythm. It’s exciting to watch a veteran like him turn back the clock and remind everyone why he’s a former Grand Slam champion. Whether he pushes on to the quarter-finals or not, Marin Cilic has already made Wimbledon 2025 one to remember.
