So here’s what just went down — and it could end up being a big deal for the Seattle Mariners. The team made the first major splash ahead of the 2025 MLB Trade Deadline by acquiring first baseman Josh Naylor from the Arizona Diamondbacks. This move wasn’t just a quiet tweak to the roster — it was a clear signal that Seattle is going all-in on a postseason push.

Naylor, who’s 28 and set to hit free agency after the season, brings a strong left-handed bat to a Mariners lineup that’s already been heating up in recent weeks. He’s batting .292 with an .807 OPS, has 11 homers, and 59 RBIs in 93 games this year. What makes him even more valuable is his ability to put the ball in play — his 12.4% strikeout rate is among the lowest in the league, something Seattle could really use given how much the team has struggled with strikeouts the past couple of seasons.

To get Naylor, Seattle sent two pitching prospects — lefty Brandyn Garcia and righty Ashton Izzi — to Arizona. Garcia just made his MLB debut as a reliever this week, and Izzi has been pitching in High-A ball. Neither was considered elite, but both had upside. Clearly, the Mariners were willing to part with young arms to fill an immediate need.

Now, Naylor is expected to jump right into the heart of the Mariners’ order — somewhere in that mix with Julio Rodríguez, Cal Raleigh, and Randy Arozarena. Manager Dan Wilson already said he’s pumped to get Naylor into the lineup, calling him a “tremendous bat” and saying the move makes their offense much deeper.

It’s also worth noting this might not be the Mariners’ only move. They’re reportedly still chasing third baseman Eugenio Suárez — yes, the same Suárez who played for Seattle before getting traded to Arizona in the offseason. With multiple contenders like the Yankees and Cubs also interested in him, that deal might be harder to swing. But the Mariners do have a loaded farm system, so they’ve got options if they want to push even harder.

Seattle currently holds a Wild Card spot and is just five games back in the AL West. Ownership has apparently given the green light to increase spending, and with 59 games left, the message is clear: it’s go time. Adding someone like Naylor, who not only brings postseason experience but also upgrades one of their weakest positions — first base — is a smart and aggressive play.

So yeah, the hot stove just got turned all the way up in Seattle.
