Marvel’s Lost ‘Blade’ Costumes Found New Life in Box Office Hit ‘Sinners’
So, here's something really wild you might not have noticed in one of 2025’s biggest movies— Sinners . Turns out, the gritty, stylized wardrobe worn by many of the background characters in the vampire thriller wasn’t designed from scratch. In fact, those clothes were originally intended for another vampire film we’ve been waiting years to see: Marvel’s Blade reboot.

During a recent interview, Sinners producer Sev Ohanian revealed a behind-the-scenes nugget that honestly feels like a hidden Marvel easter egg. When Marvel’s Blade , which was supposed to star Mahershala Ali, hit yet another production delay, costume designer Ruth E. Carter—yes, the Oscar-winning genius—was left with a warehouse full of era-specific outfits. The film was set to explore Blade’s past, apparently during a time period that oddly enough aligns with Sinners .
So what did the Sinners team do when they were racing against time to get their film ready to shoot? They struck a deal with Marvel and bought those unused Blade costumes at cost. And just like that, Marvel’s missed opportunity became a major win for Sinners . Ohanian explained that most of the lead actors wore custom-designed costumes, but many of the extras and background performers in the movie are wearing pieces straight out of Marvel’s wardrobe archives.
It’s kind of poetic if you think about it. One vampire movie that never got off the ground ends up feeding the aesthetic of another that turned into a box office juggernaut. Sinners , directed by Ryan Coogler, became the surprise horror smash of the year, grossing over $364 million worldwide. Even more impressive? It’s one of the only original stories in the top 10 for 2025—everything else is based on existing IP.
Meanwhile, Blade continues to float in development limbo. Despite being announced back in 2019, and even after Ali publicly reaffirmed his readiness to play the role, the film remains stalled. But fans can take a small dose of comfort knowing that Blade ’s shadow lives on—just not where anyone expected.
Funny how Hollywood works, right? A film that didn’t even roll cameras still left its mark on one that’s now part of cinema history.
