Massive Warehouse Fire Erupts in Erith, Draws Huge Emergency Response
Last night, Erith in southeast London witnessed a dramatic and terrifying scene as a major blaze erupted at a warehouse in a scrap yard on Maypole Crescent. The fire started just before 11 PM and quickly escalated, engulfing not only the warehouse but also several vehicles and heavy machinery. By the time the first 999 calls came in at 10:47 PM, flames had already taken hold of the site, prompting an enormous response from the London Fire Brigade.
Around 150 firefighters were deployed, along with 25 fire engines, making this one of the largest recent fire emergencies in the capital. Crews from Bexley, Erith, Plumstead, East Greenwich, Sidcup, and other neighboring stations rushed to the scene to bring the situation under control. Adding to the intensity of the response, two 32-metre turntable ladders were utilized to spray water from above and provide an aerial view of the fire's spread.

The warehouse, which is part of a single-storey industrial unit located in the Darent Industrial Park, was completely ablaze, with three diggers and numerous vehicles also caught in the fire. Residents living in the surrounding area were strongly advised to keep their windows and doors shut due to the thick plumes of smoke billowing into the night sky.
One of the most unique aspects of the operation was the deployment of a fire boat from the River Thames. This vessel, capable of pumping 2,500 litres of water per minute using remotely operated monitors, was instrumental in assisting crews battling the fire from multiple angles.
Thankfully, there have been no reported injuries, and by 6:52 AM the next morning, the fire was brought under control after an exhausting overnight effort. The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation, with fire experts on site assessing the aftermath.
Standing in Erith today, you can still sense the lingering smoke in the air, the acrid reminder of how fast such incidents can unfold. It’s a stark demonstration of just how crucial the London Fire Brigade’s readiness and coordination are in moments like these. It’s thanks to their rapid response that a potentially catastrophic event was contained before it could cause even more damage.
Events like this also serve as a reminder to all of us to stay alert to safety protocols in industrial zones, especially those involving hazardous materials or large quantities of flammable material. For now, Erith begins to recover, but the image of that towering inferno over the scrap yard will not soon be forgotten.
