Mathew Baynton Shines as Taskmaster Rediscovers Its Magic in Season 19

I honestly thought Taskmaster had run its course. Don’t get me wrong — I’ve always adored the concept. Five comedians thrown into the most delightfully absurd challenges and judged by Greg Davies with the deadpan brilliance of Alex Horne beside him? Comedy gold. But, let’s face it, the last few seasons felt like the spark had dimmed. I found myself smiling politely instead of laughing out loud, and even though the tasks were still imaginative, something was missing. The alchemy — that perfect chemistry between cast members and the unpredictable hilarity — seemed to have vanished.

So when season 19 rolled around, I didn’t exactly rush to my screen. The buzz online, however, started getting louder, especially about the new cast. Mathew Baynton, Rosie Ramsey, Stevie Martin, Jason Mantzoukas, and Fatiha El-Ghorri? Intriguing. But still, I waited. And then I caved — and thank goodness I did.

Mathew Baynton was the gateway drug. Known for his work in Ghosts , I expected him to be clever and calm — which he was — but I was totally unprepared for just how committed, unpredictable, and downright bizarre he could be. Yogurtgate, anyone? Yes, that was Mathew, naked, licking yogurt off Alex Horne’s shoe while whispering “daddy.” That’s when I realized this season was something special.

The cast had a rare, electric synergy. Fatiha's laser-focused attempts to seduce Greg became a running gag that never got old. Jason delivered explosive, chaotic energy worthy of an action film. Stevie’s delightful awkwardness was so charming you couldn’t help but root for her, and Rosie… Rosie brought baffled confusion to a whole new level, and it was hilarious every single time.

By the finale, it was clear that Mathew Baynton wasn’t just a contestant — he was the heart of the season. He didn’t win because he was the loudest or most outrageous. He won because he balanced thoughtfulness with unhinged dedication in a way that felt utterly authentic. Taskmaster needed a season like this, and Mathew was the perfect anchor.

This was easily one of the best seasons since the legendary series 5. Fans online aren’t exaggerating when they call it an “all timer.” It’s proof that when you get the right mix of personalities, with hosts who still have razor-sharp timing after nearly a decade, Taskmaster can still surprise you — still make you laugh until your stomach hurts.

So yeah, I was wrong. Taskmaster isn’t past its prime. If anything, it just proved it’s still capable of peak brilliance. And now, like many others, I’m already counting the days until season 20.
