Miles Russell Shows Grit Despite Late Stumbles in PGA Tour Round
Today I want to talk about one of the most promising young talents in golf right now — Miles Russell. At just 16 years old, this Jacksonville Beach phenom continues to impress with maturity and poise well beyond his years. During the first round of the ISCO Championship at Hurstbourne Country Club in Louisville, Kentucky, Russell was on pace for a solid under-par round. But like golf always does, it threw him a curveball in the final stretch. He bogeyed his last two holes and wrapped up the round with an even-par 70.
That might not seem flashy, but consider the context: this was only his third PGA Tour event. The pressure is intense, and the field is filled with seasoned pros. Early in the round, Russell looked in control. He was 2-under with just four holes to play. His performance was a mix of brilliance and a few tough breaks — he notched four birdies and four bogeys throughout the round, battling greenside bunkers and tricky pin placements. He got up and down from the sand just once in four attempts, and that short game grind cost him down the stretch.

Still, there were some great highlights. He nearly holed out on the par-4 fifth for what would’ve been an unforgettable eagle, settling for a tap-in birdie instead. He also made solid putts for birdie on holes 12, 16, and 2, showing off a putting stroke that’s as smooth as they come. But the turning point came on holes 8 and 9. On the short par-4 eighth, he missed the fairway, had to scramble from deep rough, and couldn’t save par. At the ninth, a 3-putt from 30 feet closed the round on a frustrating note.
Afterward, Miles showed the mindset of a true competitor. He didn’t let the late stumble get to him. Instead, he focused on what’s ahead. “The course is tough,” he said. “You just have to control what you can control, enjoy it, embrace it. If you do that, you might play the weekend — and that would be pretty special.”
He’s still chasing that milestone — making the cut in a PGA Tour event. And with talent like his, it’s only a matter of time. He hit 12 of 18 greens in regulation, made 30 putts, and scrambled effectively on half his missed greens. Not perfect, but absolutely solid for someone his age playing at the highest level.
Miles Russell’s story isn’t just about scores — it’s about potential, perseverance, and learning on the biggest stage. He tees off again this afternoon, and I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on him. Because with each round, each hole, and each shot, he’s getting closer to something truly great.
