Since its inception in 2009, the Great North 10k has steadily grown into one of the North East’s standout sporting events. Paul Foster , Chief Executive of The Great Run Company, says this year will be the biggest yet. “It’s a run for everyone,” he said, “from elite athletes pushing their limits, to first-time runners raising money for causes close to their hearts.” And with the Great North Run just two months away , many are using the 10k as part of their training journey toward the world-famous half-marathon in September.

One standout feature this year is the participation of 500 runners in black and white , representing the Newcastle United Foundation . CEO Steve Beharall expressed his pride in the partnership, now in its third year. “The funds raised are vital for our work across education, sport, and wellbeing programs throughout the North East,” he said. The wave of black and white jerseys will be a powerful symbol of community spirit and support.

Adding to the build-up, Newcastle’s Tyne Bridge has been undergoing overnight closures for the installation of the traditional Great North Run sign . This iconic sign not only signals the start of the summer running season but also reminds the city that the countdown to the bigger event has begun.

Road closures are in place, so motorists should plan accordingly, but the city is well-prepared to handle the logistics. Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to cross the bridge during the evening shutdowns, and the full bridge will be closed during race day from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm .

So whether you’re running, cheering, or just soaking up the atmosphere, this weekend promises a celebration of fitness, fun, and fantastic community spirit in Newcastle. The AJ Bell Great North 10k is more than just a race—it’s a movement, a milestone, and a moment to remember.
