Nigeria Eyes Glory in Billie Jean King and Davis Cups This August

As I speak right now, there's a rising wave of optimism in Nigerian tennis, and it’s all centered around two of the sport’s most prestigious international competitions — the Billie Jean King Cup and the Davis Cup. The Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), under the leadership of its Secretary-General, Shammah Makpa, has expressed high hopes that the country will participate in both events come August 2025.

The Billie Jean King Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Windhoek, Namibia from August 4, and the Africa Group III Davis Cup in Zimbabwe beginning August 11, represent more than just tournaments. For Nigeria, they’re an opportunity to showcase the growth and determination of its tennis athletes on the continental stage. Mr. Makpa shared these details during the ongoing VEMP National Open Tennis Championship in Abuja, emphasizing that the federation has a well-structured and strategic preparation plan in place.

What's particularly encouraging is that the upcoming Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Senior Tennis Championship, slated to run from July 21 to 29, will serve as a vital warm-up event. This championship won’t only feature locally ranked players — it may also see the inclusion of Nigerian talent based abroad. While some of these players may not have earned national ranking points, the NTF is considering wildcard entries to ensure they are included. According to Mr. Makpa, signals have already been received from female athletes abroad who are eager to represent the country. Their participation would bring invaluable experience and exposure to local players.

This effort is more than just about competition. Mr. Makpa underlined the NTF’s mission to empower youth and build a sustainable future for Nigerian tennis. The programs under the federation’s umbrella are designed to offer young players platforms for growth — including access to competitions, incentives, and even scholarships.

Another noteworthy aspect is the role of the media. Mr. Makpa gave a heartfelt acknowledgment to journalists and sports reporters for consistently highlighting the federation’s progress. He urged them to keep the spotlight on tennis, as continued visibility is essential for development and national support.

So, looking ahead, August is shaping up to be a defining month for Nigerian tennis. If all goes to plan, we’ll see our players not only participating but making a significant impact at the Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup. With solid preparation, home-grown talent, and international experience blended together, Nigeria is poised to take confident steps toward success on the global court.
