No Tsunami Risk for B.C. After Powerful Alaska Earthquake
Hey everyone, just a quick update on something that had a lot of people on edge earlier today—there was a pretty powerful earthquake that struck near the southern coast of Alaska, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale. It happened at around 1:30 p.m. local time, with the epicenter located about 88 kilometers, or roughly 55 miles, south of Sand Point, a small island along the Alaskan peninsula.
Now, whenever we hear about a quake of that magnitude, especially so close to the coast, the first thing that comes to mind is the potential for a tsunami. And understandably, people in British Columbia were on alert, wondering if this could pose a threat to our coastlines.

Shortly after the quake hit, the U.S. Emergency Alert service issued a tsunami warning for parts of southern Alaska, including the peninsula. This led to immediate evaluations by emergency agencies both in Alaska and here in Canada. Emergency Info BC quickly stepped in to assess the situation and gave a reassuring update: there is no tsunami threat to British Columbia. Let me say that again—there is no tsunami risk to B.C. from this earthquake.
That’s a huge relief for residents living along the coast, especially in areas like Tofino, Ucluelet, and other communities that are usually on high alert during seismic events. The tsunami alert issued was strictly limited to certain Alaskan coastal areas, and no alerts or advisories were extended to Canadian territory.
Seismologists are continuing to monitor the region, and officials will keep us posted if anything changes. But for now, the situation is under control. This event does serve as a reminder, though, of how critical early warning systems and emergency communications are. It's a good idea for all of us to stay informed, make sure we’re signed up for local emergency alerts, and review our earthquake and tsunami preparedness plans—just in case.
So, if you heard the news and were worried—don’t panic. The experts have done their job, and there’s no threat to us here in B.C. Stay safe and stay tuned, and as always, we’ll keep you updated with any new developments.
