One Refreshing Day Before Summer's Heat Roars Back
After what feels like a stretch of never-ending sticky days and sweltering afternoons, we’re finally getting a much-needed break — but just for a moment. Today, central and eastern Kentucky are catching their breath as drier air filters in behind a weakening front. If you stepped outside this morning and thought, “Wow, this feels different,” you’re absolutely right. This isn't the Kentucky sauna we’ve grown accustomed to lately.
Across the Bluegrass region, the humidity has eased up a bit, giving way to clearer skies and much more breathable air. Now, if you’re farther south — especially south of the Hal Rogers Parkway — you may have noticed patchy, dense fog earlier today. That lingering low-level moisture hasn’t fully cleared out yet. So, if you’re on the roads early, give yourself some extra time just in case visibility is reduced.

As we move through the day, morning clouds are breaking up and making room for some bright sunshine. Temperatures will still climb into the upper 80s, but thanks to that drop in humidity, it won’t feel like you’re walking through a steam room — at least not today. It’s shaping up to be one of those rare July afternoons where the heat is tolerable and the air feels just a little lighter. If you've got outdoor plans or errands to run, this is the time to do it.
But — and yes, there’s a but — don’t get too comfortable. This refreshing weather won’t stick around. Starting tomorrow, high pressure will start to dominate once again, pushing in hotter, more humid air from the west. By Wednesday and especially into Thursday and Friday, we’re back to highs in the 90s, dew points climbing into the 70s, and those “feels like” temperatures hitting 100 degrees or more. That sticky, oppressive feeling will return fast and furious.
And while today offers only a slim chance for isolated showers in southern Kentucky, rain chances will ramp up toward the weekend. A boundary moving in from the north may bring scattered storms, potentially cooling things off briefly but also increasing humidity levels again.
So if you’re enjoying this brief respite from the summer steam, soak it in. Open a window. Take that walk. Have lunch outside. Because the heat and humidity are already knocking on our doorstep, ready to settle back in. Kentucky’s version of summer isn’t going anywhere — it’s just taking a quick breath before ramping up again. Stay cool and keep an eye on the forecast.
