Powerful Storms Sweep Through Chicago Area with Dangerous Winds and Flash Flood Threats
Hey everyone, just a heads up if you're in or around the Chicago area right now—things are getting really intense out there. We’re under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning , and several counties are being hit hard with dangerous weather conditions. If you're just tuning in, here's what you need to know.
This Thursday afternoon has turned into quite the weather event across the region. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for much of northeastern Illinois and parts of northwest Indiana, including Cook, DuPage, Kane, Will, LaSalle, Grundy, Kendall, Kankakee, and several Indiana counties like Porter, Lake, and LaPorte—just to name a few. This watch is in effect until 9 p.m., and storms are already moving in fast and furious.

Right around 3 p.m., a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for LaSalle, Kendall, and Grundy counties. Wind gusts up to 60 or even 70 miles per hour are possible. That’s strong enough to take down tree limbs, damage power lines, and make driving incredibly hazardous—especially if you’re on open roads or highways. If you're in these areas, please seek shelter and avoid being outdoors.
At the same time, a Flood Advisory has been declared for parts of Cook, DuPage, and Will counties. Some spots have seen one to two inches of rain fall in under 30 minutes—and there's more on the way. That much water that quickly means flash flooding is a real risk. Don’t take any chances: never drive over flooded roadways. It doesn’t take much water to stall a vehicle or worse.
O’Hare and Midway airports were even under a ground stop earlier in the afternoon due to the storm line stretching from northern Chicago all the way southwest through Yorkville. Flights were delayed, and power outages are already being reported. As of the last update, nearly 5,000 ComEd customers were without electricity.
Looking ahead, the stormy pattern may ease up by Friday morning, with cooler temps coming in. But more rain and potentially strong storms could return by Saturday, so don’t let your guard down. This weekend might bring highs in the upper 80s and even 90s again by Sunday, with more sunshine and storm chances into early next week.
Bottom line: stay alert, stay indoors if you can, and monitor official alerts. Severe storms with strong winds, torrential rain, and frequent lightning are nothing to mess around with. We’ll get through this, but be cautious out there, Chicago.
