Ravindra Jadeja’s Form Under Scrutiny Ahead of Crucial Edgbaston Test
As we look ahead to the much-anticipated second Test between India and England at Edgbaston, one name that’s raising eyebrows—and concern—is Ravindra Jadeja. A seasoned all-rounder, a proven match-winner, and one of India’s finest over the years, Jadeja’s current form has become a matter of real debate. It’s not often that you speak about Jadeja with a hint of worry, but this time, the numbers tell a story that’s hard to ignore.
Jadeja’s recent performances in Test cricket have been well below par. In his last four matches, he’s bowled a hefty 110 overs but managed to take just five wickets. That’s a bowling average of 78, a strike rate of 132, and an economy rate of 3.54. These aren’t the kind of figures you'd associate with someone of his calibre. What’s more worrying is that three of those five wickets were of lower-order batters—not exactly game-changing breakthroughs.

In the first Test against England, he was far from his best. With the bat, he scored 11 and 25 not out—decent, but not impactful. With the ball, he went wicketless in the first innings, conceding 68 runs, and managed just one wicket for 104 in the second. India ultimately lost that match, failing to defend 371 at Leeds, and while the blame doesn’t rest on one player, Jadeja’s dip in effectiveness certainly didn’t help.
It’s not just this series, though. Since the whitewash against New Zealand last October, Jadeja has looked out of rhythm. Across seven Tests and 13 innings, he’s managed just 276 runs at an average of 23, with only one fifty. His bowling has yielded 21 wickets at an average of 35—far from his career norm of 24.59. His last major performance came in the Wankhede Test, but even then, India ended up on the losing side.
Jadeja has long been India’s go-to player in tough situations—a man who can break partnerships, contribute vital runs, and turn the game on its head with a moment of brilliance. But right now, he’s not delivering the impact he’s known for. His all-round ability is one of the reasons India has remained competitive overseas. Without his spark, the balance of the side suffers.
Looking ahead to the Edgbaston Test, the pressure is on. Not just for Jadeja to perform, but also for the team management to decide how much longer they can back him in this form. There's also the matter of Jasprit Bumrah’s availability—if he’s rested for workload management, the bowling attack will need someone like Jadeja to step up even more.
So, the big question is: can Ravindra Jadeja turn things around at Edgbaston? India surely hopes so, because when Jadeja fires, he brings a different dimension to the game—one that could very well be the difference between levelling the series or falling further behind.
