Richard Dreyfuss Bows Out of SharkCon with Painful Health Update

Hey everyone, I’ve got a bit of disappointing news today, especially for those of us who were excited about SharkCon this year. Richard Dreyfuss, the legendary actor who gave us the unforgettable performance as Matt Hooper in the original Jaws , has officially pulled out of his scheduled appearance at the fan-favorite event due to a severe case of bronchitis.

Dreyfuss, now 77, shared the news directly with fans in a heartfelt—and honestly, kind of heartbreaking—video posted on SharkCon’s Instagram. He was wrapped in a Jaws blanket, trying to keep things light despite the circumstances. You could hear the weariness in his voice as he apologized and explained that his doctors had strictly forbidden him from flying. And it makes sense—bronchitis isn’t something to mess around with, especially at his age. It's a respiratory illness that causes inflammation in the airways and can leave you drained, coughing, feverish, and short of breath.

In the video, Dreyfuss even struggled to remember what he had been diagnosed with, prompting his wife, Svetlana Erokhin, to gently chime in from off-camera: “Bronchitis.” You could really feel the love and care between them. But more than anything, you could sense how genuinely sorry he was to miss the event. He said, “I’m terribly sorry because I had planned to be there, and I had been looking forward to it, but I am unable to do so. I don’t want to get anyone else sick, and I don’t want to get sicker myself.”

Despite feeling “a lot of pain,” he made an effort to inject a bit of humor into the message, even joking that he hoped fans would “feel very sorry” for him—and for themselves too. It was classic Dreyfuss, still witty and charming, even through discomfort.

His wife added, “We love you, we miss you all, and we will see you soon.” And I think that sums it up. The love between this icon and his fans is real. SharkCon organizers have already announced that all prepaid autograph and photo op tickets will be automatically refunded, which is great to hear for those affected.

Richard Dreyfuss has been a fixture at events like this, especially during the 50th anniversary of Jaws this year. And while it’s a huge letdown not to see him in Tampa, his health has to come first. Here’s hoping he makes a full recovery soon. Because let’s face it—there’s no SharkCon quite like one with Dreyfuss.

Rest up, legend. We’ll be here when you’re ready.
