Ryan McMahon Steps Up as Yankees Snap Skid Without Judge
So, here's the story that’s making headlines in the Bronx right now — and it’s got everything: drama, a new face, clutch plays, and a whole lot of energy at Yankee Stadium. With superstar Aaron Judge hitting the injured list because of a right elbow flexor strain, the Yankees were in need of someone — anyone — to step up and fill the void. And just like that, Ryan McMahon, the newest guy in pinstripes, made a name for himself in only his second game with the team.
McMahon was traded to the Yankees just two days ago, and he wasted absolutely no time showing why the move might end up being one of the sneakiest good pickups of the season. In Sunday’s tight 4-3 win over the Phillies, he went 2-for-3 at the plate, drove in two crucial runs, and flashed some serious leather at third base. The game really turned in the second inning — Phillies were up 2-0, Yankees had the bases loaded with no outs, and then McMahon ripped a double past Bryce Harper. Just like that, tie game. A sac fly and a single later, and the Yanks had all the runs they would end up needing.

Now, Carlos Rodón got the win — his 11th of the season — but it wasn’t without some sweat. He gave up three solo homers, including two to Phillies rookie Otto Kemp, but McMahon saved the day again in the fifth. Philly had runners on first and second, threatening to tie it up. That’s when Trea Turner smoked a ball between short and third, and McMahon made this slick sliding stop to his left and got Turner at first. Huge moment. Game-changing.
What’s wild is, defense wasn’t always McMahon’s strong suit. Back in the Minors, he actually had a 39-error season. But he credits guys like Nolan Arenado, DJ LeMahieu, and Trevor Story for helping him clean that up early in his career. Now, defense is kind of his thing — and it showed.
The Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone was all smiles talking about McMahon after the game. He said McMahon looked "settled and comfortable" already — and praised both his calm glove and that big hit early on. And you know what? In a city that’s not always easy on newcomers, McMahon’s already winning people over.
Meanwhile, on the Phillies side, Zack Wheeler had a rare off day. He got touched up for four runs in the second inning, including hitting two batters back-to-back — not something you see every day from a guy like him. Despite launching three home runs, all solo shots, Philly just couldn’t cash in when it mattered. And that’s how a game slips away.
So yeah, with Judge out, the Yankees needed someone to rise to the occasion — and Ryan McMahon, just two days into his Yankee tenure, stepped right up.
