Starlink Restores Global Connectivity After Rare Network Outage

Hey everyone, I just wanted to give you a quick update on something a lot of us noticed earlier today — a major Starlink outage that hit thousands of users around the globe, including right here in Canada’s North. If you rely on Starlink for your internet connection, like many remote communities do, you probably experienced that unsettling moment when everything just went offline.

It all started shortly after lunchtime today, July 24th, when users in places like Kugluktuk in Nunavut and Hay River in the Northwest Territories first reported losing service. At first, it wasn’t clear what was going on — devices just stopped working. Then reports started coming in from the United States, the UK, and even India, confirming that this was far more than a local glitch. Starlink’s website even began timing out for some users, which only added to the confusion.

Eventually, the company acknowledged the issue on its website and social media, stating, “Starlink is currently experiencing a service outage. Our team is investigating.” A short time later, Elon Musk himself weighed in on X, saying service would be restored soon and that they were working on resolving the root cause to prevent future outages.

By around 4:30 PM Mountain Time, good news began trickling in — many users reported their internet was back. Starlink’s VP of engineering, Michael Nicolls, confirmed the recovery, explaining that the outage — which lasted about two and a half hours — was caused by a failure in key internal software services that run Starlink’s core network. He apologized for the disruption and emphasized their commitment to reliability.

For those of us living in the North, where traditional internet options can be unreliable due to wildfires or harsh weather, Starlink has been a game-changer. That’s why today’s outage felt so significant. It's a reminder that even the most advanced systems aren't immune to breakdowns. That said, the speed at which the issue was identified and mostly resolved is a positive sign — especially for a service that's become so vital in areas where ground infrastructure just can't keep up.

Still, this incident may give some weight to recent concerns from governments like the NWT's, which have been debating the risks of relying heavily on a U.S.-based tech company for essential infrastructure. With tariffs and international tensions always in flux, that’s a real conversation worth having.

All in all, though, it looks like the worst is over — service has been restored for most, and Starlink promises a thorough investigation to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Fingers crossed they follow through, because up here, losing internet isn’t just inconvenient — it’s isolating.

Stay connected, everyone.
