Thunderstorm Warning Issued as Heavy Rain Set to Hit London and Southern England

If you're in London or anywhere across the southern parts of England today, brace yourself — the Met Office has issued a fresh yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, and it’s already in effect. This alert, which kicked in from 10am and will remain active until 9pm tonight, is expected to bring some pretty intense weather across several regions, including London, Bristol, Oxford, Southampton, Kent, and Ipswich.

Now, this isn't just your typical summer downpour. Forecasters are warning that some areas could see as much as 60mm of rain falling in just two hours — that’s enough to cause flash flooding, damage to property, and significant disruption to public transport. Roads might be closed, and power cuts could also happen in places hit hardest by the storms.

According to Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasir, the stormy conditions are being driven by a low-pressure system that's making its way from Ireland into southern England. Along with the heavy rain, there's also the risk of lightning strikes and even hail — so it’s definitely a day to keep your umbrella handy, though staying indoors where it’s safe is probably your best bet.

Ms. Nasir also mentioned that while the south is in for a soggy and stormy day, there will be some finer weather up north. Northern Ireland, western Scotland, and parts of Wales could enjoy sunny spells later in the day.

Chief meteorologist Andy Page added that the thunderstorms should gradually ease by Thursday night, giving way to clearer, cooler conditions. But don’t put the rain gear away just yet. More heavy showers are expected to roll into the east of England and parts of Scotland on Friday. Fortunately, the weekend is looking a bit better — Saturday is predicted to be mostly dry across the UK, although rain might return on Sunday, especially in the northwest.

In light of the warnings, people in affected areas are being advised to stay alert and prepare. If you’re in one of the regions under the yellow warning, it’s a good idea to check that garden furniture or anything else that could blow away is secured. The Met Office also suggests having an emergency flood kit ready and recommends finding safe shelter at the first sound of thunder — avoiding trees and exposed structures that might attract lightning.

So, while many were hoping for a stretch of warm, settled summer weather, it seems the atmosphere has other plans for now. Stay safe out there!
